Was the arcade games title "Mortal Kombat" deliberately misspelled?

Yes, to be trademarked, it could not be a common word in normal use. Combat (with a C) and Mortal Combat (the expression were already in wide use.

By spelling Combat with a K, they made it trademarkable. Lots of companies do that.
