Do you realize that a spherical object can be divided into 8 identical pieces with just 3 cuts?

I just realized this. It is easy to visualize. Just imagine cutting the Earth along the equator and along two perpendicular longitudes. If you need a more mathematical description, picture the x, y and z axes dividing a sphere whose center is at the origin.

I don’t know of any practical applications. You could cut a grapefruit or a melon this way, but the pieces are difficult to peel.

An onion can be divided into 8–13 non-identical pieces with just 1 cut.
