Do you think there's any veracity to "metaphysics"?

Asked by Blackberry (34073points) 1 week ago

Our whole lives, we hear about third eyes, other dimensions, energy and vibrations etc.

I’ve heard claims from normal people with a good head on their shoulders, after doing things like ayahuasca, that’s there’s something out there etc.

I believe Einstein mathematically proved a 4th and 5th dimension is real, but I don’t know much else.

Anyone have opinions on this stuff?

I’m genuinely curious about it but don’t know what to think I guess.

As I understand it, it’s a way of thinking – a belief system, a philosophy.

I think metaphysics is no more (and no less) valid or believable than any other philosophy.

Physics, however, is a whole different issue.

What is your definition of “veracity”?

There are Master of Arts in Philosophy programs that allow a specialization in metaphysics and epistemology.

Metaphysics is the most fundamental branch of philosophy, and is about the nature of reality itself. Metaphysics can be informed by science, and there’s some overlap with physics in some areas like cosmology.

When you start asking questions about causality, time, why anything exists at all: that’s all metaphysics, and it is completely legitimate to think about them and come up with plausible answers.

Because of the nature of metaphysical questions and claims, there is not much scope for empiricism, so the methodologies used are based more on pure reasoning and intuition.

I should add that metaphysics isn’t tripping on hallucinogens and then blurting out something one believes is true based on that.

This is like asking “is there any veracity to math?” as @Kropotkin correctly points out, metaphysics is an academic discipline unto itself so some theories may be shown to be invalid while others may have more support for them.

For example there are competing metaphysical theories about whether the universe is deterministic or not. Within that debate there are subcategories such as weak vs. hard determinism. Obviously only one of these hypotheses can be correct, all of them are under the umbrella of “metaphysics” but the universe is either deterministic or it isn’t. Contained within that debate is the actual answer but it would be weird to say metaphysics, itself does/doesn’t have veracity. similarly there are some mathematical postulates such as Euclid’s Fifth Postulate that have been proven to not be universal, but would we say that makes mathematics have less veracity?

I think you’re conflating the very real and serious academic discipline of metaphysics with a hodgepodge of unsupported spiritual beliefs. It’s kind of like asking a question about the veracity of medicine and then using faith healing as your examples. There are zero metaphysics philosophers talking about third eyes. Tha’s not a thing metaphysics deals with.

Just to get a sense of the kinds of things a metaphysician might concern themselves with, here’s a basic introduction to Nominalism.
