What is the point of sesame seeds on buns?

Asked by chyna (51597points) 2 months ago from iPhone

They are messy, have no real flavor and I have heard they get under people’s false teeth or partials.
Why is it such a big deal that they even use it in their advertising?

My guess is to skew the nutritional info into a more positive one. Also a marketing ploy to sound impressive.

Cause “blah, blah, blah, blah on a sesame seed bun” scans better!

This is an ongoing philosophical discussion!!! (See the related Q)

There are people who’s livelihood depends on those seeds! You’re robbing them by suggesting not using sesame seeds.

To make people fail drug tests! Of course

The humble sesame seed:

“World production in 2018 was 6,600,000 tons, with Sudan, Myanmar, and India as the largest producers.”

Surprisingly they contain lots of “carbs, fiber, mono and polyunsaturated fat, and protein, and tons of vitamins and minerals.” (It didn’t give serving size)

“A meta-analysis showed that sesame consumption produced small reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure; another demonstrated improvement in fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c. Sesame oil studies reported a reduction of oxidative stress markers and lipid peroxidation.”

In addition to what @smudges and @smudges posted, I like them for the texture they add.

I though it was poppy seeds, not sesame seeds, that caused people to fail drug tests.

I don’t know but I love sesame seed buns and bagels. They’re my favorite. It is the texture for me, @Brian1946.

(and yes, it is Poppy Seeds that can impact drug tests)

According to Dr. Guy-Sitting-Near-Elaine Inna Restaurant, opium is made from poppy seeds. ;-)

If Julia LD isn’t in the TV Hall O’ Fame, she should be.

Pepperidge Farms hamburger buns with sesame seeds are my go to for supermarket hamburger buns. Delicious!

When we buy bagels we buy 90% of the time sesame bagels.

The sesame has a flavor, maybe you don’t taste it. My husband and I don’t taste provolone cheese (weird we are both the same) we see it as pointless on a sandwich.

I like sesame seeds on hamburger buns! They add a little bit of taste and texture. And they relatively stay put.

It’s the sesame seeds on a bagel that I usually pass on. Tasty, but not worth the collateral mess.

Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce cheese pickles onions on a bun isn’t good enough.

It’s all an illusion for a jingle.

Have you ever counted how many are on your buns?

Reality is that sesame seed oil help that sucker slide into your belly. ~s

@Brian1946 Have you ever seen her in The New Adventures of Old Christine?

Brian1946's avatar

@smudges

I have.

I really like her and Wanda Sykes in that series, but I could do without the Scott Bakula episodes.

Also, I thought her interactions with her son were rather perfunctory.

I like bagels with sesame seeds, even though it’s inevitable that I’ll get seeds in my teeth. I feel like hamburger buns with sesame seeds, the seeds are just to add texture, which is why I like them on bagels – texture, roughage.

@Brian1946 omg I love Wanda Sykes! Her deadpan deliveries remind me of Bob Newhart.

Brian1946's avatar

I love that Bob.
i wish he was still 45, instead of being 95.

I also wish they’d rerun some SNL episodes that featured Julia.

^^ Yes, I remember. I didn’t mention it here because I’d just mentioned about 3 people and I didn’t want to drive people nuts. LOL

One bagel place here puts so many sesame seeds that a small bottle worth wind up in the bottom of the bag and cutting board combined for a bakers dozen. Sometimes we use them in something else if I’m going to make an Asian dish or Pipian. Seems like such a waste to just throw them out. I’m not sure how long they would stay good in the fridge?

jonsblond's avatar

They add flavor and texture

Decoration: Sesame seeds also break up the plain, brown top of a bun.

They taste good, add an interesting look to rolls, and they are very healthy….great source of copper.
