Please explain pharmacy rules with seeing a doctor for a second opinion for me? (NSFW)

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24804points) 2 hours ago

I asked a pharmacist for help with the itchy scabs on my head that I had since 2000. He offered me two medications, but said that it is unethical for me to get a second opinion from my doctor.

That sounds weird. It that normal? I ended up getting nothing.

Please explain for me?

I’m not sure I completely understand. If you’ve had scabs for 24 years, I would ask a doctor first.

@Hawaii_Jake I saw my GP years ago about it. Nothing came of it. I will ask her again in October. I might ask a different pharmacist after if I don’t get the desired results.

^Good idea.

Something like that going on for >20 years, I’d find another doctor to help me if my current one can’t or doesn’t.

That’s weird and abnormal.

No pharmacist or medical doctor can stop you from getting a second opinion.

@gondwanalon He said that if I received a second opinion , from my doctor, that he would not permit me to change my mind back.

Sounds ridiculous. I think you can see a doctor for it. Maybe a Dermatologist is best.

Do you have dandruff?

The scab is there all of the time or on and off?

Twice I’ve informed two different cardiologists that I’m seeking a second opinion. They both were good with that.

An RN once told me that second opinions are worthless because if the two doctors disagree then how do you know which opinion is correct. The answer is the patient’s unique situation, needs and desires enter into the final decision to determine what is right for the patient.

@JLeslie I’ve been picking and scratching them for 24 years. The only time that they stopped is when I was on antihistamines, and after they came right back.

I even shaved my head. It did not help.

Are you sure you understood the pharmacist correctly? That’s preposterous. If I spoke to him again, I’d ask to see his license and/or I would not go back. There’s lots of pharmacies in a town of that size.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

He said that he would refuse his treatment if I asked my doctor as it would be unethical to continue if my doctor said otherwise. No take back.

I don’t remember the exact wording as was months ago.

He doesn’t treat you! He only does what the doctor says. He’s full of himself.

Find another pharmacy…there’s plenty.

@smudges Thanks. Will do.

See a dermatologist, not a physician and not a pharmacist.
