If you use shampoo bars can you help me out here?

Asked by canidmajor (21743points) October 5th, 2024

I have recently (a few months ago) switched to shampoo bars as part of an overall effort to reduce my use of single use plastics. My hair is shoulder length and pretty thick and I have quite a problem getting the hang of effective use of the bars. The length seems to be a large part of the issue. Do you have a preferred brand? Any tips to share?
My main problem is getting enough lather to my scalp.

General question, honestly asking for help about use of shampoo bars, not about other ways to reduce plastic waste.
Thanks

I have never heard of them.
But maybe get it wet and scrub a loofah on it to work up a lather first then scrub?

I used a couple different search engines. Here are a few tips:

Don’t use hard water.
Try a baking soda rinse first.

Hold the shampoo bar in your hand and rub it between your palms to create a rich lather. For longer hair, make sure to use enough water to produce abundant lather. For longer hair, use more water for more lather.

One site said to apply the bar at the roots, then work toward the ends. Don’t be too aggressive, which can result in dry hair.

Avoid over soaping your hair, and don’t leave it in your hair too long, which can also lead to dryness.

Rinse very well.

Use an acid rinse.

Another site said to use a conditioner bar.

Using something bristly like a loofla would create a better lather.

Guys, thanks for the attempt to help, but I am literate and have excellent deductive reasoning skills. I was hoping people with actual experience could help. My friends who use the bars all have much shorter hair than I do.

Loofla hair?

I used to use a Lush shampoo bar for travel. It was great, all I remember is it was blue. I bought it in a Lush store, but I think you can buy them online.

I remember at one point friends being upset with Lush about something political, so if that matters to you, you might want to google, but I don’t remember what issue it was.

It might have been the seanik, but I’m not 100% sure. I bought the round tin to keep it in.

Here is the location search if you want to go in a store and smell before buying. https://www.lush.com/us/en_us/shops

@JLeslie I’ve heard Lush recommended before, easy to use, effective without being too drying. Thank you for reminding me, and the links.

@canidmajor You’re welcome. I tend to be dry, including my hair, and the shampoo worked ok for me. I don’t know if I would use it daily at home, but for travel it was sufficient.
