Have you seen the amazing northern lights recently?

Asked by JLeslie (65783points) 2 months ago from iPhone

Friends have amazingly colorful video and photos of the Aurora Borealis recently. I have friends as far south as South Carolina seeing them.

I took a tour of the NOAA facility in Boulder two weeks ago and they mentioned solar flares should be peaking this year.

I wish I was up north to see some of it. I probably should have looked up into the night sky when I was in Colorado, but I failed to do so. I assume they are seeing some of it in that state.

I saw it from my backyard Thursday night. I could see the red colors with the naked eye but of course the colors popped while looking through my camera. It was a first for me. I jumped up and down in excitement because it was on my bucket list.

Not in person, and they have been visible in some areas around here.

There’s a comet in our sky that’s going to be visible until November.

I’m going to focus on stopping and looking up tonight, when I go out to unload my car.
I’m going to look for that comet, and the Andromeda blur.

My wife and daughter saw them from our front yard on Thursday night. They said they were gorgeous with reds and some green.

This time of year, once we begin to get dark again here in Alaska, Lady Aurora visits quite frequently. That said, last week was pretty impressive even for Alaska. I got some of the best aurora pics I’ve ever gotten right out my back door and straight overhead. I’m so glad it was visible in so many places and so vibrant in color for so many. It’s rarely so vibrant even here.

In consideration of all these celestial sightings, it’s time for my Green Tornado avatar.

I have not seen sunlight in weeks.

^^Is that due to geography or personal activity?

I’m in NY on the CT border, and last week, Thursday, my daughter and I were visiting my friend who was staying at her son’s house about an hour away. When we left, my daughter checked her phone and apparently all of her friends were posting about the northern lights. We had the hour ride back so I wasn’t counting on seeing anything by the time we got home, and it was cold, too. When we got home, my daughter was looking around and I just said screw this, it’s too cold and there are too many trees. About an hour later, my friend (the one we just visited an hour away) texted me to go outside right now and take a look. That was around 10:30 pm. I went out and I could see the magenta glow. I came in and told my daughter “come outside now” and we got a few pix. I sent the pix to my family on WhatsApp. I didn’t post them on Facebook because my Facebook feed was filled with about 100 photos from friends and groups, posting the same thing. It almost got to be a little too mundane, seeing all the photos of the same thing.

I’m in my 50s and have never seen them. My daughter is very lucky to be a teen and to have seen them, especially because I don’t think they were ever visible in the area I live in.

No. I tried to see the comet last night, but failed. I should go look outside now.

. . .

Hmm, only a super-bright moon, and some stars.
