When you're not enthused about doing something, do you procrastinate or do you knock it out and get it over with?

Asked by jca2 (16892points) 2 months ago

I’m a procrastinator, especially now that I’m retired. There’s always tomorrow.

What about you?

If you’re not a procrastinator, what’s your method to git ‘er done?

~Don’t do today what you can push until tomorrow.

Quote from an American president who said the opposite.

“Don’t put off till tomorrow if you can do it today”.

I may have told this before, but I had a thin book titled “Stop Procrastinating Now!”. It followed me through quite a few moves. One day, years later, when I was packing for another move I ran across it, said “F-it” and put it into the donations box. I had never made it past the table of contents.

It’s almost sounds like it should be related to the voting question. I’m definitely a, do stuff as soon as possible person, for the most part. I’d rather get it done and then have more time to relax once everything is done. Plus, then if something unexpected comes up, you’re good because you already took care of it.

I have tasks on my list still pending from 1987.

I need to write some thank you cards to people, and I keep putting it off. I tell myself that once I actually sit down with the cards and the pens and the stamps, it will be fine and it will be fun, but I just have this aversion to doing it.

Terrible procrastinator. I’m procrastinating going shopping by answering this question.

I usually procrastinate for a while and then jump in and do it. The jumping-in moment often requires some degree of mental numbness to avert the feeling of pressure about it, which is generally what makes me push it away to begin with.

Don’t look for logic there.

Sometimes I do part of it and then procrastinate with the rest, maybe even for years.

Oh, look, you were wondering this same thing a year ago.

It depends on two things -

- is there a deadline that I have to meet?

- how long do I anticipate it will take?

There isn’t one single, simple answer to the question. It’s situationally dependent.

@Jeruba Thanks for finding that. I was kind of wondering if I asked this before, because it sounded familiar.

@jca2 It shows up in related.

It depends on the thing.

If it’s quick, I usually get it over with. If it’s going to take a long time I might procrastinate. It would be better if I did the opposite.

If it’s something like cleaning the kitchen, I do it right away almost always even if I dread it. If it’s putting the folded laundry away, I might let it sit for days.

I always wait until the last minute. I work better under pressure.

I have gotten to where I do it right now, because I will forget it in a few minutes.
