If you are on statin therapy then how much do you take per day?

Asked by gondwanalon (23199points) 1 month ago

My cardiologist wants me to start taking a “low dose” of Atorvastitin. Her definition of a low dose is 20 mg per day.

How about you?

FYI: I’ve always had naturally low total cholesterol with triglycerides, HDL, LDL and ratios all in the normal ranges. I’m 74 and male.

40 mg, for years and years. Simvastatin. Doc is happy – he says my numbers have been consistently good.

Rosuvastatin, 10 mg. This is my second year on it. Numbers were great after one year.

Atorvastitin 40mg at bedtime.

I have always had low cholesterol, but my doctor doesn’t like what my body does with the little cholesterol it has.

Rosuvastatin 10 mg. My problem is more high triglycerides. I’m 60 and F.

A good friend is on Atorvastitin 40mg. It messed his stomach up at first but did the job for his numbers.

Thanks for all the responses.

I’m not a medical doctor. But I’m cutting my Atorvastitin daily dose in half (from 20mg to 10mg).
Why? My total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides (without statins) has always been low (well within the normal ranges).

Cholesterol is an important component for healthy life because it’s crucial for many bodily functions and necessary for proper cell structure and hormone generation.

I don’t want my blood cholesterol level to get too low.

Why does your doc want you to take it if your levels are all good? It does have some downsides. That’s what I’d be asking her.

40 mg atorvastatin nightly.

@smudges My cardiologist said there’s some calcification in my coronary arteries. Supposedly the statin drug will decrease the cholesterol under the calcium layer. She convinced me to start taking a “low dose of statin”.

Rosuvastatin 10 mg. Pretty much every male in my family tree died from heart disease. My genes suck, so I do what I can to improve my odds a bit. I also don’t eat beef and most red meat, and try (unsuccessfully) to stay healthy.

@gorillapaws We’re statin buddies!

@janbb Is “cheers!” the appropriate salute between statin buddies?

All people on these meds should get together and move to Statin Island.

I’ve been taking 20 mg of Atorvastatin for almost 10 years now.

If anyone’s interested here’s my blood lipid panel results while taking Atorvastatin 10 mg/day:

Total cholesterol = 129 mg/dL
Triglycerides = 43 mg/dL
HDL = 62 mg/dL
LDL = 57 mg/L
Cho/HDL ratio = 2.1 (Under 3.5 is ideal)
LDL/HDL ratio = 0.9. (1.0 to 3.5 is ideal)

I haven’t noticed any side effects since I started taking Atorvastatin 10 mg/day 3 weeks ago.
