Do you think there are squirrels who spy on other squirrels so they could later steal their food that was buried in the ground?

What might a squirrel think who returns to dig up his cache of food only to find it missing?

As asked. Thanks.

I’ve heard that squirrels remember 50% or less where they’ve hidden their food.

Yes, I think squirrels spy on other squirrels, just as they spy on cats and dogs and people and everyone else. They also go around looking for food anywhere they can find it, snacking and storing what they don’t currently have appetite for. I think they do so much of this that they don’t remember all of it (as mentioned above) but as asked, when they do go to a cache they remember and find it missing, I expect they often just tend to think:

“oh there’s no food here now, ok where’s the next place that might have food – sniff – oh there’s something.”

My guess is they only think about someone else having taken it if they have a specific memory about that one spot, and/or if they can still smell the thief’s scent. But they store and eat so much, that I doubt they tend to care much. If they have a prize worth caring much about, I bet they tend to eat it first.

With squirrels, they spend a lot of time raping, or running from squirrel rapists.
