Does it seem to you like toothpaste is more watery now than it was decades ago?

Asked by jca2 (16892points) 1 month ago

I remember when I was little, toothpaste was the consistency of cream cheese. It was thick and dense. Now it seems like it’s the consistency of yogurt.

Does it seem more watery to you?

I don’t know about watery, but my toothpaste is supper foamy.

It may have more to do with you using different brands than you did 40 years ago. When we were young, toothpaste came only in metal tubes. Now there all kinds of dispensers and different gels.

Mine (Sensodyne) is still like cream cheese. Maybe it’s the brand you’re using.

I’ve always pretty much used Crest my whole life, except with an occasional deal on something else.

I use regular Crest gel (hard to find) and it seems the same.

If the paste seems thinner to you I bet it is. Next time I wind up buying paste I’ll try to remember this Q. Sometimes I can’t get the gel.

I’ll ask my husband, he uses Colgate paste usually.

Are you using whitening now and previously used regular?

@JLeslie I usually get the type that’s for cavity protection but sometimes it’s whitening. I don’t think whitening really whitens my teeth, so I don’t pursue that kind. I mean, if it’s on sale, I might, but I don’t look for it.

More effective to get whitening strips or separate gel. Toothpaste isn’t on your teeth long enough to whiten much in my opinion, and can be irritating.

Yes, @JLeslie. I did whitening strips once and it made my gums sensitive, for a few days, which I heard it does but I’m really not into it.

I looked at my Crest and it’s Advanced Health. When I was little, there was just one type.

Crest still makes regular toothpaste, but sometimes the simple old fashioned Crest with fluoride is hard to find. https://crest.com/en-us/oral-care-products/toothpaste/crest-cavity-protection-toothpaste-regular-paste/ I have an easier time finding the paste than the gel.

Edit: I find the gel in Target.

Yes, every brand I’ve used in the last 5–8 years is not thick like years prior.
