What’s your budget? Are you an apple person or a PC person? What’s your primary use for it?
I’m generally very happy with Lenovo Thinkpads. I get them used for a couple hundred bucks. I got my wife one too. She’s usually somewhat picky but she has been happy with it also. There are low power models and you can use one of these USB C port extenders to attach just about any peripheral you can imagine.

Budget $400~.
Generally a PC person.
I had a Lenovo before this one so I’m comfortable with them.
Just home use. Need to scan

You don’t need a PC to scan, you can do that with a tablet. What you need to scan is either a good camera or a printer with a scan feature.

I do have a printer that scans. Everything is so blown up. I’d go to the library and scan what I need….but I can’t get there.

I do need a new PC tho. The one I have is rejecting all my pass words to log on.

If a picture from phone will work I’ll start there.

I bought an HP laptop last Black Friday from Sams. I like it and was amazed how fast it works compared to my last one which took forever to open.
I can’t remember the price, but I’m sure it was under 500.00.
So, maybe if you can wait until Black Friday, you can find a deal on line somewhere.

Thanks @Chyna!

I can walk you through how to reset the Windows password if you don’t know it and are comfortable entering the bios and using a linux USB stick

Not uncomfortable. Just so tired.

It did say something about a USB Stick but said nothing about linux…unless I missed it.

You can reformat your drive and reload Windows with a USB stick with a windows installer on it. You can use linux running on a USB stick to reset the password without having to start from scratch. Either way, if you liked your old laptop, you can get it working again.

Let’s go to PM so I can find you tomorrow. I’m going to bed here in a minute.
Thank you so much.

Lenovo and HP are the favorites in our computer professional household including the homeschool students and nonprofessional me.

I second this!

That’s what I’ve been doing for a decade or so. Thinkpads are business models that typically sell new for $1k & up. Large businesses upgrade en masse, so there’s always a big supply of older models on the market. Parts and accessories are readily available.

Recommendation as of October 2024 – laptops which use the current Windows 11:
Thinkpad T480, 490, or the newer T14 (14” screen)
Thinkpad T580, 590, or the newer T15 (15” screen)

For example, my most recent ebay purchases

1)
$368 shipped
Lenovo ThinkPad T14 16GB RAM 512GB SSD
Warranty through November 2025

2)
$200 shipped
Lenovo ThinkPad T580 15.6“16GB RAM 256GB SSD
No warranty
