Yup, and I ended up moving out within a couple of weeks.

About 20 years ago I lived in a large (three building, 12 story) apartment just outside of Boston, Mass. As it happened, my place was way at the end of the hall, so I had only one neighbor adjoining (to my left) but the outside view of the parking lot on the left.

I never had a problem with noise. Occasionally I would hear heavy footsteps from the apartment above me, but not often enough to worry about.

My main complaint was the smell. The people across from me were south Asian – maybe Filipino – and the cooked a lot of (my opinion) foul smelling dishes. And they did it with their apartment door open so the smell permeated the hall.

My lease was for one year – I moved out at the first chance I could.

@elbanditoroso Funny thing, if you had befriended them and tasted those dishes I’d wager you would have stuck around.

The two apartments I had didn’t have any official quiet hours but they were quiet places where everyone respected each other and nobody did anything loud.

The county I live in has quiet hours, so technically I could call the police if somebody was being really noisy in the middle of the night. However, I prefer not to go down that road unless it’s something really extreme. Not to mention that nowadays the police are really reluctant to come out in general. So I usually just try and deal with it. But if I’m getting ready to sleep, I have my fan going in my room. I also listen to a YouTube video that has the sound of sleet hitting the window and winds. Between those two things, it usually blocks out a lot of noise coming from other apartments.

I lived in a college town for five years and there were no quiet hours, and stereos played full blast at just about any hour. The only time people complained was during finals. But even then people who were done with finals early made a lot of noise.

When I was in my early thirties I lived in an apartment where I could hear even the quietest conversations from the unit below me. One of the two women who lived below me was quite vocal during sex. That was just something to put up with.

The last time was in college. The only pain in the ass part of my college existence.
