Will TDS, "Trump derangement syndrome", be in the next edition of the DSM6?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24944points) 2 weeks ago

Or is it just tounge in cheek for now?

Will the next edition have any interesting changes?

For example: Video game addiction? Burnout?

I think it would be better named Deranged Trumper Syndrome.

flutherother's avatar

I don’t know about the next edition of DSM but what we are witnessing was described back in 1841 by Charles Mackay in his book “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds”.

Edit I just read TDS in Wikipedia and its been used as a pejorative for years.

I thought that It was a novel saying.

janbb's avatar

@flutherother I’ve read that book – or some of it – and it certainly does apply to now.

@janbb Will call library for a copy. Thanks @janbb and @flutherother

I’ll say that American politics are in a reality distortion field

Dutchess_III's avatar

I think maybe the Electoral College will vote in opposition to Trump supporting states.

ragingloli's avatar

I assume by that you mean his supporters wearing trashbags, diapers and fake wound dressing on their ears after the orangutan got hit by shrapnel.

Addiction to gaming / internet gaming is already there. I seriously doubt there will ever be a diagnosis related to trump. There wasn’t with hitler.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^There’s a “Stockholm syndrome.”

I’ve only heard the “TDS” phrase here. I’m sure it’s used more elsewhere, but I don’t hear it in everyday conversation.

I thinking Trump will win in November, and then we’ll see what happens when we shake the idiot tree again. Whatever falls out, will be Trump’s minions. Surely, some “fine people.”

I went to visit a lady from our church today who has been in the hospital. At some point in the conversation she told a friend who would come with me and I that she didn’t have a tv. We were flabbergasted! We asked her why she didn’t have a TV and she said she got rid of it the day Trump got on the plane to leave the White House after, as she put it, he was cheated out of the election. I kept my mouth shut. But no matter who you’re for, who gets rid of their TV for something like that? I asked my friend on the way home, the one who had come with me, so what happens if he wins the election? Is she going to buy a brand new tv?

Blackwater_Park's avatar

@LifeQuestioner Trump is not going to be allowed to win this election and it may be the single time I agree with the true powers that be.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I hope you’re right ^^^^

LifeQuestioner's avatar

@Blackwater_Park I am cautiously optimistic that you are right. But the point of my comment above was that I am even now amazed at how blind people can be to the kind of person he is.

seawulf575's avatar

Probably not. It is not in DSM-5 and no studies or papers have been done on it so it is unlikely to end up in DSM-6. But not being in a DSM does not mean it isn’t an issue. Sociologists have frequently thought the DSMs are lacking. They don’t address things like “burnout” or “nervous breakdown” though I’m pretty sure most of us have suffered from these or have known someone that did.

If I had to put a cause on TDS it would be the propaganda from the leftist media. They have pushed lies and hate about Trump for so long that they have effectively brainwashed people. That is how those with TDS act. They have even overdeveloped cognitive dissonance to the point that they will do mental games of Twister to keep the lies alive.

I’m curious to see what happens in a few days. If Trump wins, those with TDS will continue to spiral down into their obsession. But if he doesn’t win and he fades from politics, what will they do? They’ve been so obsessed with Trump for so long and are so invested with him as a focus of their lives, that suddenly removing that will leave them very confused and unfocused for a long, long time.

flutherother's avatar

@seawulf575 I didn’t need the leftist media, whatever that is, to tell me Trump is unfit to lead. I came to that conclusion quite successfully on my own.

janbb's avatar

@seawulf. I’ll tell you what this person will do. I’ll be delighted if I never see his fucking face or hear his fucking name ever again. (And by the way, you never seem to actually see any of the videos of Trump from his actual rallies and what he does like giving the mic a hand job and simulating fellatio,)

canidmajor's avatar

@janbb, I’m sure he does see the videos, but finds them cute and funny. I’m sure he thinks it’s cute that the guy employs such violent rhetoric about Liz Cheney, and I bet he thinks Paul Pelosi was somehow “asking for it”.

MrGrimm888's avatar

As much as Wulf has overlooked about Trump, he has NEVER endorsed violence directly.

I understand that tensions are high right now, but this is bridge too far.
The conservatives are the one’s who follow heard logic.
Casting baseless aspersions on Wulf, would make us no better than Trump and his sheep…

Dutchess_III's avatar

But he did @MrGrimm888. In 2016 he encouraged his followers to commit violence on the Dems. Remember he said he’d pay their legal bills.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^I was speaking about our fellow jelly, Wulf. He has not personally condoned violent behavior, to my recollection.

A lot of people like Trump, and if Harris wins, hopefully we can all be friends again someday.

When they go low, we go high. Right?

canidmajor's avatar

@MrGrimm888 If one vehemently supports a candidate who supports and incites violence, then that one directly endorse violence.

seawulf575's avatar

@flutherother Really? How did you come to that conclusion? Do you know the man personally? Had business dealings with him directly? What crystal ball did you use to tell you the man was not worthy to lead?

seawulf575's avatar

@MrGrimm888 Thank you. However, you have all ALWAYS cast aspersions on me. Not just now, ever since Trump came onto the scene and I didn’t dare to follow the proscribed narrative. I appreciate that you recognize I have never condoned or encouraged violence on any of this political foolishness.

seawulf575's avatar

@canidmajor So you supported Biden who said it was time to put a bullseye on Donald Trump and 2 days later Trump was shot. So does that mean you directly endorse violence? I guess it does. You have never once condemned the violence or hateful rhetoric your Dems push every day in every way. That tells me more about you than your pompous claims of virtue.

canidmajor's avatar

I have often condemned, and on this site, violence endorsed by anyone, @seawurm575. As flattering as it is to think that you have read and remembered everything I have ever posted here, it just ain’t so.

And your schoolyard “I know you are but what am I?” whataboutist rejoinders are just juvenile.

ragingloli's avatar

Just a reminder that all 3 of the orangutan’s wannabe assassins were republicans.

Blackwater_Park's avatar

@MrGrimm888 “The conservatives are the one’s who follow heard logic.” It’s both sides, there is a prevalent echo chamber on the left. It’s as bad as the one on the right. Average people in general follow their heard. It’s more about group identity than anything real outside of one or two things that may affect people personally. This election has three things going on that may sway people from their heard. The Roe V Wade reversal has some jumping the fence from the right to the left. In recent years the left has abandoned males, specifically young, white males. They’re not necessarily typical conservatives but the right appears to be more welcoming to them and they’ll vote that way. Neither side has anything good for the economy. Both platforms scare me but there is the grass is greener on the other side effect. People who are really struggling now are likely to switch sides. This is why we are seeing union members go red even though their union orgs want them to vote blue. It’s going to be a wild ride tonight. I don’t think the powers that be want Trump so if I’m putting my chips on a color, it’s blue.

seawulf575's avatar

@canidmajor, according to you, “If one vehemently supports a candidate who supports and incites violence, then that one directly endorse violence.”. Using your own views, since you supported Biden and he called for violence against Trump, you directly endorse that violence. You didn’t want to give me the out since I never endorse violence on this site or elsewhere. You supported Biden, Biden called for violence, therefore you directly endorse that violence. Your own words. Or are you saying you are a hypocrite and only want to hold me to whatever standard floats your boat at the moment, but certainly not hold yourself to those same standards?

canidmajor's avatar

Well, @seawurm575, I don’t remember him saying that, I didn’t see a clip, but you get points for your clever “neener neener, I know you are but what am I?” response to a post that was written to someone else. <cue applause>

Dutchess_III's avatar

@seawulf575…they were talking about YOU and defending YOU. Dont you ever get tired of the rage that abides in you…and all MAGAs?

canidmajor's avatar

In all fairness to your point, @seawulf575, I looked up all that. Yes, Biden said that. The next day, he said he was wrong to say it. Less than a week later, he stepped down. Trying to find an equivalency there is just too far fetched, but not surprising, I guess. <eyeroll>

flutherother's avatar

@seawulf575 I know Trump from his own words and actions and I have concluded that he is unfit for public office of any kind.

MrGrimm888's avatar

@Blackwater_Park I will certainly agree, that the left has it’s own echo chamber. A LOT of those people and left-wing media, may spend days or weeks beating dead horses and I’ve been hearing it for years.
But. They don’t intentionally spread false information, and they certainly don’t try to spark division and violence.

There’s a BIG difference.

You won’t find armed and armored left-wing “poll watchers.”
The national guard, has been activated in multiple states, but not for Harris supporters.
Trump, AND fright-wing media, are absolutely going to resort to violence if Trump doesn’t win.

In my lifetime, I’ve NEVER seen an election (in America) with so much military involvement.

The SAME military that is responsible for making sure Trump doesn’t start a Civil War, will be under his control if he wins.
The very fact, that War could break out over lies, told to gullible people full of hate, tells me that America isn’t a great place anymore.

The fact that Trump is not still in federal prison for attempting a coup, but is actually running again, is mind blowing.

The left, has sat around, and likely given away another election, by using the “we’re not him” strategy…

One CAN see the “radical left,” on display on “The View.”
No disrespect (my mother loves the show,) but that is about as hard-core as the left gets.
No IQ contests won, but no pure fabrication of “facts.”

The right, their extremists, are stupid and dangerous.

seawulf575's avatar

@flutherother Really? So you didn’t see those words on a lefty “news” outlet? None of those words were taken out of context for you? Or are you saying you have been to Trump rallies?

seawulf575's avatar

@Dutchess_III I know they were talking about me supporting. But their reasoning is that if your candidate says something that is violent and you support that candidate, you are endorsing that violence. You, just like every other lefty on these pages, by that logic are guilty of endorsing violence. So you have three options here: to say that reasoning is bullshit or that you are a hypocrite for believing that reasoning only goes one way, or that I am correct and you all endorse violence.
