What rather small and unexpected thing has recently completely kerflummoxed you?

Asked by canidmajor (21640points) 1 month ago

For example, a couple of hours ago I found a mouse in my washing machine. Just hanging out, being incredibly cute. I was completely gobsmacked. I had no idea how to deal, I called my incredibly brilliant kiddo who suggested I put a long enough stick in so he could climb out, he did, and humane traps will be deployed tomorrow, and subsequent relocation to the charming countryside.

I am still chuckling at just how surprised and incompetent the incident rendered me, and how silly it all was.

You? Anything silly and surprising to share?

Two nights ago I got up from my bed to go to the toilet and my spectacles weren’t on the bedside cabinet whereI always leave them. I was confounded by this and after much searching I found them under my bed and nowhere near my bedside cabinet. At such a dark hour the thought of maliciousl elves didnt seem unreasonable.

^^ I was gobsmacked by the use of the term “spectacles” by our Jelly from Scotland.

I broke my Spam lid.
Mentor suggested that I use a can opener… and It worked.

I saved ~$50 by not ordering a pizza.

Spam was delicious and filling. I only had two little slices microwaved for 1 minute plus 30 seconds with hot dog bun.

25% lower sodium Spam. Put rest in the fridge for later

Is kerflummoxed some sort of cross between kerfuffle and flummoxed? I’m assuming it means the same as flummoxed.

I feel like I’m flummoxed a lot the last ten years. It seems to happen more as I age. I can’t think of a specific instance to describe for the Q, it’s just feeling more unsure than when I was younger.

Husband lost his job and I cut our grocery/food budget by over 50% I was pleasantly surprised that we could eat almost all the same things (some different brands, no takeout) within our budget (last week was the first week of tighter purse strings). It did take a LOT of checking and planning, though.

Also, the shock and anger has worn off. That’s also a surprise.

Not so silly and probably not as happy as you were looking for, but with Autistic kiddos, I was genuinely worried about the very low food budget and meeting their sensory needs.

The time change. First time going it alone in 22 years.

I got an iPad for the first time ever. I’ve had it for two weeks and just finally figured out how to turn the volume up. Ugh. This crap is hard to figure out.

I recently bought a new car, a 2025 Honda CR-V.
I am very proud of my driving skills, especially while backing up, but these back-up cameras have me frustrated.

jca2's avatar

@filmfann I’ll use the camera, but I may still turn my head to check how it really looks when I’m in the spot.

JLeslie's avatar

@filmfann The back up camera is great if something is right behind the car out of view (my husband’s cousin’s 2 year old son was killed by a car that backed up over him) and the camera is great to see if you are lined up in a parking space even if you pull in front first.

jca2's avatar

@JLeslie Oh yeah, I use it to check my parking lines all the time.

canidmajor's avatar

@jca2 That’s what I use mine for, too.

@filmfann They take some getting used to but are helpful.

I’m refinishing a piece of furniture and my original plan for how to finish it has morphed several times. It’s all wood, and I’m thinking about making the vertical pieces on the corners a different finish than the rest. I have to be careful about what I plan, because a small can of paint is 25 dollars, so I don’t want to buy paint and not be positive about my plan. My hope is to have it done by the end of November.

The piece of furniture (a small table, like a telephone table) was like 15 or 20 dollars at a church sale, but between the sandpaper, the custom cut glass for the top, and the stain, paint and finish it’s going to be over 100 dollars. It will have a story, though haha.

I should have taken a “before” picture but I didn’t.

I gave myself a haircut and it’s way shorter than I expected. But it’s so cute!!!
