Do you research outrageous claims online?

Asked by Pandora (32432points) 1 month ago

Today my niece believed that nuclear weapons in the US was going to be tested. I asked her to send me the link, which was from a UK tabloid. I sent her a link of all known tabloids. I now know where she gets all her conspiracy ideas.
So, it made me wonder what news sources do flutherites rely on for actual facts and if any of you read tabloids.

Fox, MSNBC and CNN are tabloids in my opinion. I like Reuters. News outlets are like politicians though. It’s hard to “fact check” using any of them.

Depends on the fact I am researching. Usually in my case it’s medicine, so I have different sources.

Al Jazeera English is amazingly balanced on American news that doesn’t involve the Middle East.

@rocketguy Al Jazeera is a mouthpiece to Hamas and I deleted their bookmark

Their Mid East news is completely biased, totally favoring the Arab world. That’s why I was amazed at how neutral they were with other news.

Claims that cause me to raise an eyebrow I sometimes look into using reliable media sources or official/semi-official websites.

RocketGuy's avatar

@flutherother – In that case I’d check several sources. If there’s 80% overlap then I’d believe the 80%.

flutherother's avatar

@RocketGuy Yes, but I wouldn’t expect reputable sources to report on the same issue in exactly the same way.

Hence the 80%.
