Do you agree with Hannah Arendt, theory that the death of empathy is one of the most and telling signs that a culture will fall into barbarism?

If you agree, do you think we are getting there or already there?

I don’t know, but her book The Origins of Totalitarianism has been on my reading list for a while. Thanks to the idiocracy of the American electorate, I will bump it up in the cue.

Lack of empathy makes barbarism possible. For example the destruction of the Palestinians of Gaza.

I prefer “indifference.”
Apathy, is a MASSIVE problem, but is a natural way of coping with circumstances out of one’s control.
There is a spectrum on the right.
From just indifferent, to white supremacist. All now carry the blame for the future. I hope they all live to be 150 years old, so they can watch the Earth die because of them…

This is “Trumpism.”
It’s worse than barbarism, because Trumpism has intent to harm, not indifference.

Interesting. Without emphaty I can’t think of any other reason how human nature wouldn’t end up devolving into a barbaric stage.

I do agree, to a certain extent. Finding empathy is difficult at times when the other party shows none themselves.
