What was the difference between video classifications from the past? (NSFW)

Specifically X, XX, and XXX.

What qualifications are looked at to decide what adult shows get these classification?

First, X, XX and XXX aren’t official designations – they are marketing designations by movie companies. The highest (or lowest) rating is NC-17.
