So what exactly does Berkshire Hathaway actually do?

You need to spend some time on the BH website or Wikipedia.

BH is a holding company that owns 50+ (maybe 100 or more) different companies. Everything from railroads to insurance to chocolate candies to oil to realtors to everything in between.
