Why would someone make a joke, and then get offended when people laugh?

Asked by SergeantQueen (13325points) 1 month ago

If I was going to be offended at somebody laughing at a joke I made about something like a personal tragedy, I wouldn’t make the joke in the first fucking place.

I am exclusively talking about someone making a joke about their own situation. Seems odd to use humor to cope but get pissed when people go along with it.

A stand up comedian had to give the audience “permission” to laugh at jokes she made about a personal thing, I found it odd she even had to do that. Made me wonder why people are so dumb.

Gaslighting, that’s why.

Yeah, it’s probably a good idea not to joke about something you, you know, don’t want to joke about. But I think some people think humor is a good way to cope with something, then when people laugh they’re like “oh shit actually never mind I didn’t want this” and they get pissy. As if they wanted to be self-deprecating but didn’t want anyone to join in. But it’s also kinda too bad at that point? If you’re going to make light of something, you’re implicitly giving everyone around you permission to make light of it as well.

Because the joke, itself, brings you, yourself, to mind. It’s on you!

Shame is a funny thing.
