What do you think about Trump making a statement telling Hamas to release the hostages before he takes office?

Asked by JLeslie (65776points) 3 days ago from iPhone

Here’s the quote:

If the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date that I proudly assume Office as President of the United States, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity.

Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied History of the United States of America. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW!

Bluster. As usual.

Sounds pretty silly, and also written by someone other than Trump.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh was it spelled correctly or something? Did it make sense? If so then it’s not trump.

Trump resolved the problems of the MIddle East with the signing of the “Abraham Accords” back in 2020. Shallow, showy and meaningless at the time and now almost forgotten.

It is something Biden should have done in October of 2023. It should also be noted that the day after our election Hamas was suddenly willing to talk about stopping the war…something they have not been willing to do until then.

^Yes, almost as if it was all politically motivated.

Well, Gaza is already suffering a genocide.

If Trump wants to be complicit in it, then that would be an impeachable offense and one that could land him in The Hague. We have the Leahy Law that prevent the US from giving weapons to countries that are committing crimes against humanity.

The US is bound by the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Not only are we forbidden from participation in Genocide, but we’re obligated to take action against those perpetrating it. Hamas has always been willing to exchange the Israeli hostages for the Palestinian ones.

Bully wording to his statement.

I was worried nothing would happen until Trump was in office so he could take credit and possibly suffering would continue longer than necessary. I was glad to see him make that statement. I realize he might be angling to be able to take credit if something positive happens before he is president, but I care more that the war ends sooner rather than later, that the hostages are freed, and that the Palestinians don’t have to worry about bombs being dropped on them.

@flutherother You think the Abraham Accords were meaningless? Do you think Hamas thought they were meaningless? It seems to me Hamas attacked when they did to stop the agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel. I know the Abraham Accords mostly were about trade and money, but I think it is pretty significant that ME countries sign agreements with Israel, it shows they acknowledge Israel.

You haven’t heard much about the Abraham Accords, because the Biden Administration chose to not use the term and the left biased media like MSNBC doesn’t want to talk about it, I don’t know what media you read or listen to, I don’t want to assume. Moreover, documents were signed while Trump was in office and negotiations continued with Saudi and Israel, and then October 7th happened.

@JLeslie ”...I care more that the war ends sooner rather than later, that the hostages are freed, and that the Palestinians don’t have to worry about bombs being dropped on them.”

What has Israel done in the past 75+ years that would lead you to believe that Israel would stop dropping bombs on Palestinians once the hostages were returned? especially with Trump giving them the green light to seize Gaza and the West Bank?

flutherother's avatar

@JLeslie The Abraham Accords were little more than a distraction from Trump and Netanyahu’s legal difficulties back home and I’m not sure Abraham himself would want to be associated with them though I’m sure he was never asked.

I think he’s trying to get hostages back using the threat of force. And I think they know he’s not playing.
I’m very interested to see his process in resolving many of these issues.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No. He’s not playing. At least he think he’s not. However he has absolutely no clue what he IS doing.
Someone is pulling the strings on his puppet mouth. He just says whatever someone tells him to say with no cognitive ability to even understand what they are saying, or why. And certainly not able to understand the ramifications of what comes out of his parrot mouth.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III You mean Biden? That poor old man.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No. I mean trump. Who is just as old and has had learning disabilities all of his life.
Biden is old and he may be slow because of it, but at least he knows what he’s doing and how FUCKING SERIOUS his job is.
For trump it’s just another pathetic game in his lifelong desperation to get his daddy’s approval. And he doesn’t care who he sacrifices to get it. That includes you and everyone else.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III Well most of us decided to take another chance on him. You havent left the country so I guess we’ll all get to see how it ends up.

Dutchess_III's avatar

How you could decide that after seeing what a cluster his first was is way beyond me.

Trump will order the rubble that used to be Gaza to be bombed more?..

REALLY empty, stupid, threat, and honestly, he shouldn’t be allowed to be offering ultimatums in the name of the US when he isn’t POTUS yet.
