Can Fluther get in trouble from hate speech in quips?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24982points) 2 days ago

Recently some Jellies have been triggered from the recent murder of the United Healthcare insurance CEO.

Can we get in trouble from not stopping hate speech?

The owners of the site can, depending on various laws. Digital law is changing and this site does not seem to have the resources to keep up. Once C-63 kicks in, just a complaint to the right people and an unsympathetic review board could start the beginning of the end here. Further down the road, a mishmash of state regulations could increase the regulatory burden so much that small sites just fold.

Users will most likely not be held accountable, except in the most egregious cases.

I wish trump would disappear off the face of the earth. Is that “hate speech” or an opinion? There’s also freedom of speech to take into consideration.

I must have missed the question. I was thinking about asking what everyone thought about the glorification of Luigi. Do you have a link to the triggered responses? I’d like to see them.

You also have to take into consideration the definition of “hate speech”, and I’m sure there are almost as many definitions as there are people. I’m not sure the govt even knows for sure what it is and I suspect it would start many arguments.

What’s your definition?

But there are legal definitions of hate speech, and I’ve rarely seen anything of the kind around here, and it was always modded away.

@jonsblond

Just look at my comment history.

I stand by what I said, but if it would get other people in trouble, I would tone it down.

Otherwise, I personally do not believe what I said was hate speech.

A common definition “any form of expression through which speakers intend to vilify, humiliate or incite hatred against a group or a class of persons on the basis of race, religion, skin color, sexual identity, gender identity, ethnicity, disability or national origin.” source

But as also said above, lots of different definitions. The U.S government does not have a formal one. U.S does have the 1st amendment, however.

BTW, I know this is not 100% not directed at me, but, I know it also is lol

^^ Maybe I haven’t read everything you’ve written, but what I have wouldn’t be called hate speech.

Yeah, I do not think so either but I was saying that it needs to happen more and all that. I could see where, per that definition, it could be considered that I am inciting violence against a group of people.
HOWEVER, it is not on the basis of sex, gender, etc. It is on the basis of them being corrupt. So, there is that.

I would hope that if myself or anyone else actually posted hate speech, that it would get modded. That just crosses a line for no reason.

Incitement to violence can be it’s own crime without the hate speech.

I feel like almost everything here, is free speech.

As far as people getting mad at people for a celebratory response to the CEO’s death, I get it, but these corporate losers have worked very hard to earn their notorious reputation.

I think the people that are mad at the “McSnitch” (love that) and want to free Luigi, are out of line.

I rarely condone violence, or vigilante justice. I’m not condoning this event.
From Luigi’s statements, the reason he shot him (instead of poisonor a bomb,) was to avoid hurting an unintended victim.
Regardless, he has no authority to do many of the things he did.

By using a mostly 3D printed pistol, he has advertised such technology. If he thought he was helping society, it’s more likely that he has helped spread gun violence in his efforts. And as I’ve mentioned, I’m glad he didn’t accidentally hit someone else.

As far as actual hate speech, this site IS monitored by really all of us, and there ARE Mods, that would never let someone post some manifesto here.

If we did get in trouble, we’d be the most liberal site probably ever punished for hate crimes.
