So, why do you guys think they suicided Suchir Balaji?

Asked by SergeantQueen (13110points) 2 days ago

“In recent months Mr Balaji had publicly spoken out against artificial intelligence company OpenAI’s practices, which has been fighting a number of lawsuits relating to its data-gathering practices.

In October, the New York Times published an interview with Mr Balaji in which he alleged that OpenAI had violated US copyright law while developing its popular ChatGPT online chatbot.

The article said that after working at the company for four years as a researcher, Mr Balaji had come to the conclusion that “OpenAI’s use of copyrighted data to build ChatGPT violated the law and that technologies like ChatGPT were damaging the internet”.

Everyone knows ChatGPT/OpenAI or any of this AI generating bullshit is not getting their information 100% through fair use. I mean, be fucking for real.

So if this is already a major point of debate, they already have lawsuits, what is the point of suiciding this kid?

Suicide = self killing.

I’m not sure how others can suicide someone else. Kill them, maybe, but ‘suicide’ is not a verb.

What are you really asking? Why did one of the OpenAI people get murdered?

When there are untold billions of dollars at stake, anyone who gets in the way is a potential victim.

Sorry, it was a silly way to put it.

Internet slang.

They murdered him but labelled it a suicide- so I said they “suicided” him.

Actually, “suicided him” is a thing in games. Ex: An army captain may say that because the left flank was compromised that he’s going to suicide the left flank.

And suicide is used as a verb in psychology and by suicide counselors and probably others. Apparently, the more common “committed suicide” implies a crime due to the word “committed”. This is an attempt to de-stygmatize it. I learned this when volunteering for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Internet slang sucks.

I thought it was more common after Epstein

So if there’s no point, and no evidence, why do you assume it’s what happened?

I mean, eat the rich, sure, I’m down, but you gotta see the reality of your enemy, not the boogeyman,

I have never heard of someone “being suicided.” Not even Epstien

@SergeantQueen – Don’t worry. I have been reading and using “suicided” for many years and I’m 53 years old. Your usage is correct and appropriate.

On one hand, it seems needlessly complicated to hire a contract killer to go after this guy when the whistle had already been blown, and it’s reasonable to conclude that becoming a whistleblower comes with its own stresses and life-ruining consequences such that it could drive one to suicide. But on the other, I wouldn’t put it past these companies to silence these people to prevent them from providing additional evidence in a lawsuit or case against them. This is not the first time a prominent whistleblower has wound up dead. The only option for these companies would be to make it look like a suicide.
