Have you streamed any good movies, shows or documentaries lately?

Asked by jca2 (17049points) 1 month ago

I’m staying home today and just looking for something to stream.

I was just watching an interview with Tim Matheson on a morning show and I see he was in a movie “Killing Reagan” about the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan. I might stream that.

Do you have any suggestions? I also love documentaries and true crime, and I like series like “Mad Men” and “Ozark.” I also like historical series like “The Tudors.”

“Breaking Bad” is on my list but since it’s such a long series, it’s going to be a deep dive, time wise, so I am putting it off.

Breaking Bad is well worth it, imo.

I really liked the Ted FAnson series on Netflix – “A Man on the Inside” and in a nstier vein “The Perfect Couple” with Nicole Kidman and Liev Schrieber.

jca2's avatar

@janbb I liked The Perfect Couple, as well. Also, another one with Nicole Kidman, “Big Little Lies” (also starring Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley).

True Detective was extremely dark, disturbing, and incredibly well produced with exceptional performances.

YES! I watched La Palma and it was very good. Netflix.

@ragingloli Veristaium is great

I just rewatched 1917 last night on Netflix. It is a marvel of film engineering. Roger Deakins is a fucking genius.

The White Lotus

(Tried The Man on the Inside and the acting/direction/characterization seemed way too forced to me.)

janbb's avatar

@Zaku It gets deeper the more the series goes on but I take your point.

Yea….One Piece.

Laapaata Ladies is a great modern Indian film on Netflix. In Hindi (I think) with English subtitles. Just delightful.

I read the books years ago and just started the Netflix stream of Outlanders.

Finished Disclaimer with Kevin Kline, Cate Blanchett, and Sasha Baron Cohen. SO SO GOOD!

Another +1 for Veritasium. Also, if you like his stuff, you may also enjoy Johnny Harris and/or Huge if True. They can be a bit melodramatic, but I often learn new and interesting things, or at least get exposed to new ideas.

“Dark Matter” is a very good alternate reality series on Apple TV.

@Zaku I saw both seasons of The White Lotus and I liked them both a lot. I was sad when what’s her name got killed off at the end of S2, though.

The White Lotus season 3 is beginning February 16, 2025! Can’t wait!

Just watched the movie “Carry-On” with Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton. Well done and will hold you solid for the whole movie. This is currently on Netflix.

Caravanfan's avatar

@seawulf575 Yeah, it was totally formulaic, but a fun yarn.

@SnipSnip I watched La Palma yesterday and it was pretty good! Good scenery plus a decent plot.

@smudges Thailand!

@seawulf575 and @Caravanfan I just read a NY Times article about the TSA and how it’s depicted in Carry On, and what parts of the movie were realistic and what parts were not. I also read the comments to the article and a lot of them gave good reviews. Some mentioned that some parts of the plot were unlikely to occur. I do really like Jason Bateman (I always recommend Ozark to people). I wasn’t planning to watch Carry On prior to this, but now I think I will, thanks in part to the Times article and thanks in part to the positive comments (above).

Yesterday, I watched La Palma on Netflix, and then a 2016 movie The Oranges, which was filmed not far from where I grew up, and is about a young adult who has an affair with her best friend’s father, and then I watched the new Nate Bargetze stand up, which I think was also on Netflix. I also followed some of the YouTube suggestions given (above).

Since I’m not going out again today, I may watch Carry On.

Please continue with the suggestions. I’m looking into all of them and watching trailers and googling. I do appreciate all of the suggestions and the time you’re all taking to answer. Thank you.

Right now I’m watching Toast which is a BBC movie about the food writer Nigel Slater, based on his memoir.

@KNOWITALL I see a lot of people talking about 6888 on Facebook. They say it’s great.

Zaku's avatar

@jca2 Yeah that was sad.

However it also felt to me like an example of what I tend to like fiction to do – not to necessarily have characters die, but be unpredictable yet naturalistic about what happens, because it feels like the sort of thing that often, but not necessarily, happens during misadventures. I like it to feel more like it’s a story about something wild that actually happened, rather than that things happen (and that characters die or not) for dramatic reasons.

smudges's avatar

^^ Which one was sad? @jca2 mentioned at least 7.

smudges's avatar

@jca2 I’d love to see White Lotus in Greece!

Zaku's avatar

@smudges I meant the one @jca replied to me about above, i.e. the last death in episode 2 of White Lotus.

jca2's avatar

@smudges One of the main characters who was in White Lotus got killed off.

smudges's avatar

^ right – I’m guessing you mean Jennifer Coolidge (Tanya) Just fyi, “In 2023, she was included in the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.”

jca2's avatar

@smudges Yeah, I didn’t want to say it just in case anybody has been under a rock and wanted to see the show. It’s common knowledge, though, from about a week after the second season dropped, everyone knew she was killed off. I loved her character. She was silly and goofy and added a good dimension to the show, I thought.

smudges's avatar

^^ ooops! Didn’t even think about it being a spoiler! :\

Has anyone seen “Blink” on Nat.Geo.? I’m looking forward to watching it and am just curious about reactions. I suspect it’s very good.
