Would my hands be considered deformed?

Asked by SergeantQueen (13326points) 1 day ago

I have brachydactyly type D and Dupuytren contracture

It does not affect my life too much, but they do get tired and sore pretty fast.

Oh my gosh I just realized my big toe is also affected :O wow

Do people comment on them?

Yeah people make jokes about my thumbs, but so do I.

The short tendons thing, not really. Most just find it weird. It is relatively obvious and sometimes I have to bring it up because it can really hurt my hands at times.

I wouldn’t call it a “deformity.” Just an anomaly.

I don’t think I would use the word deformed, but I guess some people might. I’d probably describe your hand or thumb as abnormal or simply describe the characteristic, like “her hand can’t straighten all of the way.” When would that come up though? I wouldn’t just say it out of the blue.

A woman I know can’t straighten her hand after a hand injury, I didn’t even notice until she told me. I guess an unusual shaped thumb I might notice more, but I rarely look at people’s hands. My MIL has marks all over her hands and I didn’t notice for years until she pointed it out. Like 10 years.

Everyone has something. My nose is on the bigger side, my stomach is never flat even when I don’t weigh much, my hair is thin, my pinky toes and the one next to it aren’t straight, and I’ve had wrinkles around my eyes since I was a teenager. We notice our own stuff more than other people do.

If these afflictions have been diagnosed properly, there may be physical therapy. You are still young, and it’s worth looking into…

As far as “deformed,” I guess I’d honestly have to notice it, first, but I can’t imagine why I’d comment on it.
Most people don’t notice hands.
Unless you’re wearing fancy jewelry…
There used to be a rumor that Megan Fox had “man toe” thumbs. I heard it back like 20+ years ago, so it wasn’t the internet because I didn’t use the internet much then.
She probably has normal thumbs. My point being, bad people will say bad things about everything, true or not.
We are all unique. And in a sense, that makes us ALL beautiful.
“Deformed,” is a word….

Like @Dutchess_III said, I would call it an anomaly rather than a deformity. And if anyone ever comments on it negatively, you can always point out that you share this anomaly with Megan Fox.

Yeah, nobody makes comments to be rude, the thumb thing I joke about. I usually bring up my hand being hard to straighten only when I am in pain, or literally cannot do something. Like when my gym teacher would tell me to straighten my fingers during push ups.

Have not seen a doctor, for either. Well, I tried for my tendons but he said it was just my hand cramping and told me to take OTC meds. Did not even look at them. That is genetic though so, I know what the condition is.

The thumb thing I can just look at a picture. so, no doctor for that.

There are hand specialists if you ever wanted to see if there is some sort of therapy or surgery to correct not being able to straighten it. I guess you have already read up about treatments anyway. There might be new treatments that arise as time marches on if you haven’t looked in a while.

Interestingly, not being able to bend your fingers is probably more restrictive. Even a pinky finger, people don’t realize how much support our pinky gives when carrying something.

The little flaws about my husband, he has a wrinkle on one side of his face that I think is cute and also kind of an indent on his forehead. Both I find endearing. He walks on his toes like his dad, which cracks me up, it’s genetic I think.

My dad is color blind, and I liked helping him match his clothes and following the red line and what color the traffic light was when in cities with sideways lights (yikes).

The genetic things are part of your line :) your family.

I have one Brachydactyly thumb. Most people don’t notice. Thai and Indian palm readers call it the vengeful thumb. It portends to my being vengeful, which is not far off. I have an ex-coworker who has it on both thumbs. I made sure to be good to her all the time.

I don’t think most people notice hands.

I don’t think of it as deformed.
