How do I buy a good pillow? What do I need to know?

Jellies have been so helpful with all my recent domestic questions. Here’s one more: how do I select the right pillow? I’m well past $5 pillows at Target, but I don’t know how to judge what I’m paying for. I think I paid about $40 for what I’m using now, bought at least 5 years ago.
Should I go to a mattress store? Or am I better off with a department store?
Can you actually tell anything by trying one out for five minutes in a store?

You probably cannot tell within 5 minutes.
The only advice I can give is to maybe try and get one that fits your sleeping… style? I sleep on my side. They have pillows for when you sleep on your back, and it is shaped to fit your neck and stuff. You probably already know that, but it might narrow it down.
I have debated on the pillow cube. I was also going to say the purple pillow but I googled it, that is too much money. Good lord $200 for a pillow what has the earth come to? Even the cube is $150
Anyways, pillows are hard. You do not want to spend too much money, they might wear to fast. But maybe those special ones last longer. You probably won’t 100% know if it works until you have actually slept on it
I have started using the ones with bamboo fill. They’re more comfortable and keep their shape better. After two years, they’re still like new. They’re also machine washable which I do about when I’d be tossing other pillows. I can’t tell in the store, I have to try them for quite some time. I think they were about $50.
Edit, just checked my Amazon history and it has been four years.

Sleeping is extremely important to your health. Don’t skimp on bedding including pillows.
It is a personal preference to what you may like. I suggest going into a mattress store, gather a bunch of their pillows that they sell. Lay down on a mattress and try them all out. Determine what you like and don’t like.
Walk out of the store with this new information and shop elsewhere for what you like.
It really depends on what you like. I’ve tried super-whammerdyne pillows that didn’t work for me. I’ve tried memory foam pillows, feather pillows, pillows with various fills…none of them worked for me. But I finally found one that I have stuck with for the past year or two and am still using it every night. I don’t remember the brand, but there were several brands available with the same idea. It was a pillow with a side of stuffing. The pillow was stuffed to what they considered the right amount of fill for that side. But they gave an extra smaller bag of fill if you wanted to add it. The pillow had a zipper opening. I ended up adding all the extra fill. Now the pillow is soft, but firm, it doesn’t mash flat halfway through the night, and if it starts to get pushed down, I just fluff the pillow and it is right back to what it was before. The fill is just the normal shredded foam. I guess eventually the fill will break down and it will no longer be as good, but that might take another couple years.
