How wonderful is mayonnaise?
So wonderful imo. I pick apart left-over rotisserie chicken, slice some grapes or an apple and celery…then add in this wonderful substance called mayonnaise and I get a magically delicious treat that’s velvety smooth to the palate.
Also, who invented this?

It is heavenly. I make my own.
The most popular theory is that mayonnaise originated in Mahon, in the Balearic Islands, Spain, in 1756. During the Seven Years’ War, the French Duke of Richelieu’s chef created an egg and oil sauce after finding the island lacked cream. The sauce was called mahonnaise after its place of origin.
Have you ever made it fresh from scratch? It’s considered one of the mother sauces in some French cuisine sources.
Context is everything. Frozen cubes of mayonnaise do not much enhance the flavor of a nice Sauvignon Blanc.
@canidmajor That’s true, though I can think of some appetizers with mayo that would pair nicely with a glass of crispy Sauvignon Blanc.
Can’t stand it. Makes my skin crawl.
I’ve never been a big user of mayonnaise except when making tuna salad. Nor have I been a big fan of chicken salad but two times on a recent New England trip I had chicken salad made with mayo, craisins and walnuts and it was delicious. I will try making it sometime in the warm weather, perhaps with curry powder in it as well.
I like some but others not as much. Hellmans or Kraft for me. Tuna, potato salad and a few other recipes are alway better with mayo. :)
No offense, really. Mayo is an abomination. If I get a sandwich with mayo, I’m sending that shit back. Gross.
Made tuna fish for lunch, with Mayo !
@janbb Curry chicken salad is awesome!
Only in small amounts. And only handmade or a few particular brands.
I dont know if you guys have Jimmy Johns (freaky fast) but they use real mayo and have the best veggie sammy I’ve ever had.
@Dutchess_III Do you think its sweet, the Miracle Whip? I can do a little but I prefer the Hellmanns.
Um…tangy more than sweet. My reasons could have more to do with calorie count, but I have to go look.
Yep. Calorie count.
Mayonnaise: Around 90 calories per tablespoon
Miracle Whip: Around 40 calories per tablespoon
Well I have for 40 years @Willie. I had babies and basically nursed for 4 years straight. I didn’t realize I had gradually increased my calorie intake (nursing will suck the calories right out!) until I quit. And didn’t reduce my calorie intake and I boomed! So I started counting calories and never stopped. It’s such a way of life that I don’t even realize I’m still doing it.
I’m actually reversing that now, trying to gain 20 pounds. Really hard.
@Dutchess_III Fried egg sandwiches every day may help. Good protein and carbs plus Miracle Whip! Haha! Or deviled eggs yum.
Lol! I know how to do it backwards Know! It’s just hard.
We ate that instead of ice cream as kids. Ice cream is too expensive.
