Have you noticed that actors appearing in television commercials are not as physically attractive as they used to be?

Not at all unusual to see people who are overweight and the average age seems to have increased. Does this represent a change in how we view ourselves?

Funny, my brother and I were just talking about this. He said that he saw some stats that said in 1990 12% of Americans were overweight. Now 40% are overweight. So if those are even close to being true, I would think that commercials are trying to reflect real people.

I think tv is trying to normalize their representatives – attractiveness, weight, mixed families, gay, variety of ethnicity, etc. They’re not perfect anymore.

Actors will probably do more commercials as they get older because they’re aging out of bigger projects. I’m guessing their agents are pushing them to accept smaller gigs.

No, it’s a DEI thing, one I’m happy to see. It’s more realistic and not over the top in either direction

It was no longer realistic to have thin blonde women that look like models and men that looked like the Marlboro man.

I agree with the above that they are going for more realistic representation and I’m all for it. Now if they only wren’t trying to sell me noxious stuff…...

They are trying to make an appeal to all shapes and sizes. In the past they tried to brainwash us into thinking that just wearing these jeans will make you appear to others a certain way. Or that Pepsi is going to change the world harmoniously.
Marketing of the past super sized people to thinking it was healthy. The made you think it wasn’t okay just just be yourself. Now they sell you the fix with a pill or a shot for the things they marketed to you in the past that made you need them.

Thankfully, I see almost nothing with ads any more, so no, I have not noticed this.

^^ Most of my streaming services now have ads.

Yes. But even at that they are generally more attractive than the average person.
I see ads for “heavy” girls that shows their bodies from the waist down, like in a swim suit, but they aren’t realistically fat. No cellulose, for example, or blobs of fat hanging down. They have perfectly proportioned curves. Just bigger.
Their faces are more attractive than average, too.
Huh. I just realized they show more heavy women than men. I wonder why?

I think if you go way back you will notice a lot of former actors where not that attractive to begin with. I’ve seen old shows I use to like where I thought the actors were attractive and now looking at them, they don’t appear as I remembered.
So to me I feel they were attractive enough at the time. But as we changed and plastic surgery became a must to be in Hollywood and actressess aged out by 40 and actors by 60, but now they can stay longer so long as they don’t look too old at least for the women. So now we are going back to the times when people didn’t have to be that plastic perfect. Just normal to attractive looking.
Also keep in mind that beauty is still in the eye of the beholder. Black and white photos or people in the 50’s and 60’. I’ve seen old movies that were done in Black and White changed to color and suddenly they don’t looks so attractive. The ones I linked are black and white but even in those professionally taken photos you can find a lot of unattractive actors. Its just that most of those were often made the villain and not the top actor.

^^^ Steve Buscemi comes to mind. He just plays the weird guy.

SnipSnip's avatar

The guys, no. The stand-up hair and skinny body in tight clothing ruins an otherwise handsome man. I like men who have some size and dress like a man.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I agree that’s yuck @snip. Not attractive. But I’m talking about “heavy” guys. You don’t see “heavy” guys in commercials as often as we see heavy women.

chyna's avatar

I watch old 50’s and 60’s reruns of Perry Mason. Don’t judge me.
There is not an ugly or even slightly unattractive woman on there.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Right? And old shows where the woman actually enjoys getting raped.
But we digress.

Attempting to look like their target market.

Plus, advertising has been under fire for pushing and portraying a very difficult to achieve “beauty.”

I think it’s great for advertisers to not push an image that is twiggy thin with perfect glam make-up and extension thick hair. I also think sometimes we are going a little far with normalizing being overweight.

Yes, people are mor likely to watch shows with actors that look more like them, hence more racial diversity as well.

Our heroes age with us.

The chance of me seeing a specific commercial is close to zero. So, no, I’ve noticed nothing about the people in commercials.
