Is there such a thing as too much psychotherapy?

1) Is there a limit to how many times a week that you see a psychologist?

2) Is there a limit to having more than one psychologist independent of each other?

In the US, insurance will only pay for one visit per day. There have been times in my life when I went more than once each week. Other times, I went weekly. These days, I go every other week or once every 3 weeks.

The only time I’ve heard of having more than one psychologist was when one was for an individual and one for couples.

@Hawaii_Jake Did you mean to write once per day?

I’ve gone twice a week many times. As far as two psychs, google says it’s ok. But insurance won’t pay for 2. Personally, I think it’s easy to get the mindset that “I’m so sick/bad off that I need more than one therapist”, and that can mess with your mind. I’d think you can make yourself worse if you obsess.

Most people only go to one therapist but they might also go to a psychiatrist to prescribe their meds. Psychologists or clinical social workers don’t prescribe meds. Freudian analysis often involved 5 sessions per week but that would be pretty uncommon and unaffordable these days.
