Has anybody seen anything definitive about whether Medicaid is currently available?
It has been one confusing headline after another since Monday, when Trump said he was putting a freeze on all federal funding (which would have included Medicaid.) Then he started walking back on particular programs, including Medicaid, until finally (I believe it was Tuesday, but maybe Wednesday?), the news came that the White House was rescinding the freeze that had been put in place Monday.
But I am still unclear if it really is in effect. I am supposed to get my COVID booster tomorrow after work, but I don’t even know if my insurance will be covering it. I saw a judge put a freeze on the order until this Monday (February 3rd), so I guess I should be okay, but I also have a hemoglobin infusion that I’m due to have done next Wednesday, and I am probably going to have to call my insurance immediately beforehand to find out if it’s still covered. (The vaccine tomorrow wouldn’t be that much out-of-pocket, but I imagine the infusion, along with the bloodwork would be.)
So, particularly if anyone has any links that will answer my question, I would appreciate it.

@Dutchess_III yes, the problem being that I don’t really get a chance to make personal calls from work, and I have to rush to my appointment right from work. So I may have trouble getting ahold of someone that day. Hopefully, the judge will clear up things one way or another on Monday.
I’m still wondering if anyone has seen what was going around yesterday regarding Trump supposedly rescinding the order.
I think every thing is deliberately chaotic in this administration and nobody know anything definitively. Still, I imagine it’s best getting the shot now if you can because things may only get worse once RFK is confirmed.
@janbb that’s what I was thinking, because I could see them trying to ban vaccines. But I need to get it anyway, because COVID cases are rising in my state again. I was supposed to get it in December, but had to cancel my appointment because I was sick.
@LifeQuestioner I had delayed getting my flu shot but go it recently for the same reason. I think whatever you can do now, do it fast. I also renewed my passport early to avoid hold ups there.
@janbb Good idea! And I didn’t even think about the passport thing. I have never traveled out of the country, so never bothered to get one. (Now I’m wondering if at some point I might need to.)
The original EO excluded any freezes on Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. The original EO has been rescinded but every agency still has to review all spending on financial assistance, grants, and loans to identify what could be on the chopping block.
Good! And that’s why we have 3 different branches of government, so no one person make things happen. Just because trump wants doesn’t mean it will happen.
Yay.
@seawulf575 that’s not what was first said at all. There was a freeze put on all federal funding, and only after that did Trump start walking back on Medicaid, etc. I don’t think he even had a clue how many programs would be affected and then people started pushing back. But I’m sure you have a different take on it.
Because he has no clue how our government is set up, much less the specifics.
@LifeQuestioner Where did you hear what was said initially? I’m guessing on some left wing outlet. I don’t go to “news” agencies. I went and read the EO that he signed. It specified that his freezes did not pertain to the things I mentioned. What happened is what so often happens…the “media” started reading into it and trying to make it sound horrible. The report their spin as fact and people like you buy into it, getting upset that you are sure Trump did exactly what they said. After all the times they have lied, I’m not sure why they are given any credence at all…why people don’t do the research themselves before getting upset.
@Dutchess_III Your lack of understanding of civics is glaring. Trump, as POTUS, has the responsibility to ensure we aren’t wasting money. That is one of his functions. So yes, when he finds something he questions he has to do what he can to ensure it is the right thing.
If Medicaid were currently on hold, there’d be an outroar so loud, because all of the Medicaid recipients who are currently in nursing homes, currently in the hospital, recently had surgery, currently receiving care at home to keep them out of nursing homes, currently on hospice, and everyone else who’s been to the doctor, hospital, dentist or any other medical facility in the past few days would have had their accounts held up, and they’d all be bitching, so since we haven’t heard anything of the sort, assume all is well.
@jca2 Actually, there had been a uproar and that’s why it’s been walked back.
@janbb yes, my point being that if there were currently no Medicaid, you’d hear about it continuously.
trump gives not one shit about any of his constituents causing an uproar.
But the other branches do care. That’s the only reason we were able to put a stop to it.
@Dutchess_III That’s all besides the point. My point was that Medicaid is working at this point in time.
@jca2 yes, it is working for now, but who knows what tomorrow will bring or at least Monday. And it was down for time on Monday because people were trying to access the portal and could not.
trump’s reign as usual. Remember his first term when right off the bat he decided to stop ALL people flying in from certain countries, for any reason and left every one tasked to follow his law in confusion about what to do and how to do it? Like the FFA and airport security? He didn’t even know why he was doing it.
I would assume Medicaid is functioning as usual, but when you get to your appointment just make sure it’s covered or call ahead.
Welcome to the world of what it is like to have private insurance. I never know what is going to be covered and how much will be covered. It has been a nightmare for over 30 years.
I can tell you doctors offices usually won’t do any procedure if there is no insurance coverage unless a patient pays up front, so your doctor giving the medical treatment likely knows if they are getting paid or not. They aren’t going to count on a Medicaid patient being able to pay.
The news would be practically 24/7 about Medicaid benefits in a freeze if that was happening, so my bet is you won’t have a problem.
I’ll add, if Medicaid is administered similar to how ACA is handled, something does need to be done to fix the massive rip-off to the American people. I do wonder how Medicaid is administered, I might ask that Q. I think since it is done by the state level it must vary.
Just as an example: I’m paying $1,300 a month using COBRA and the same policy through ACA is $2,200. If we make $50k a year I think our premium was $450 a month if I remember correctly, so the government would be paying the rest of the $2,200. Remember I get the same coverage for $1,300. That’s ridiculous. Someone needs to put in some controls on healthcare. The problem is Trump and his friends usually talk about throwing it out to competition. That won’t work.
Freezing healthcare isn’t the answer though. That’s irresponsible.
@JLeslie When I got fired from my job about 8 years ago, at which I was paying $55 twice a month for my health care coverage, I was told my Cobra would cost $850 a month. That’s with no income coming in whatsoever. That’s when I start looking around because I had various health issues and I couldn’t do without health insurance, but there was no way I was going to be able to pay that $850 a month, even if I had been willing to. You’re right about Medicaid different for different states, and it all depends if they have the extended version. For most States, it is only if you are of a certain age but your income is so low that you qualify for Medicaid instead of medicare. But in my state and in about 12 other ones I believe, we also have Medicaid available for those on low income. Trust me, I would not be able to afford even the ACA healthcare on my low income, and because of my health issues, I can’t work more than part time. And that’s before I even start on dialysis, which is going to take 3 days a week.
@LifeQuestioner You qualified for Medicaid, but let’s say you didn’t, my point is your $850 COBRA might be $1400 through ACA, and that disgusts me whether you’re paying it or the government.
