What flag is this?

Asked by raum (13634points) 3 hours ago from iPhone

Go to any government website. What is that flag in the top left corner?

I could only find this link:
https://www.historicalamericana.com/product/9-star-flag/

But the stars aren’t staggered.

I looked up what UCV means as it is in the description of the flag. It means United Confederate Veterans and per the description in the offer it is a post-Civil War flag they made representing the 9 states that seceded from the Union.

the one being used on US government website at the moment for no good reason

sorry didn’t read the details. My bad

Oh I missed the part in the question about it being on gvt sites. Can you provide a link to one because I just went to a few sites and didn’t see it?

irs.gov has it

jca2's avatar

What page on their site, @Zaku ? I just went there and it’s not on the main page.

Zaku's avatar

@jca2 Look at the very top grey bar right above the IRS logo. It says, “An official website of the United States Government.”

jca2's avatar

Oh yeah. I wonder if they do that just because 50 stars would look like a jumble in that tiny pic.

Zaku's avatar

@jca2 Probably.

It was visible in 2023 too, FWIW.

@jca2 I was wondering that as well. If this was used for the previous administration as well. Trying to fact check from both sides. :/

The answer I was looking for! Thanks, @Zaku!

I saw it now. Weird though.

It was a transitional Confederate flag used from May 18 to July 2, 1861.

I suspect it’s always been like that to avoid putting 50 stars on a flag that small and we’ve never noticed it.

@Zaku Which date are you looking at in 2023? I looked at December 31, 2023 and didn’t see it.

Also looked at February 1, 2025 and didn’t see the top banner.

raum's avatar

@Caravanfan Oh good find. I glanced at that same page and missed it.

janbb's avatar

@raum But I don’t see that flag on that page either. The one you linked to in the OP was from the post Civil War Confederate veteran’s group as described in the link. Unless i’m missing something.

@janbb Perplexity.ai to the rescue.

@Caravanfan But I trust my own native Jewish intelligence much more than AI!

smudges's avatar

Go to hhs.gov or ssa.gov. In the upper left corner there’s a tiny flag with 9 stars.

janbb's avatar

@smudges No. I said I found that. I’m disputing what the original flag is from the OP’s link versus @Caravanfan ‘s. Just for the sake of argument; not that it really matters.

smudges's avatar

I thought there were a couple of people who didn’t see it. I guess all of us are talking about 2 flags – the one linked by the OP and the small one on govt sites.

janbb's avatar

@smudges yeah, I think you’re right. Two flags.
