Christians, as usual, define it as all about their credo.

Which I find ironic, because it seems to me that modern Christianity tends to be one of the least spiritual religions I know about.

I relate to spirituality as being about who and what we are, and how we relate to the universe, and distinguishing our true core selves from our acquired habitually repeated thoughts and feelings.

And, tuning in to the parts of our experience that our thoughts, feelings, and defense patterns, tend to have us ignore.

And, to how we relate to what we don’t think of as ourselves, and so how we choose to relate to our experiences. And practices where we tune into such things as our body sensations, untended feelings, the natural world, other people, animals, plants, and places, dreams, ancestors, and spirits.

I believe in something, just not really a God. I am more of a trust the universe person. For me, that is spiritual. I would rather guide my own life with my own set of morals and ethics. Obviously, some of them align with religion. I would not kill for example.

But, I believe you can be moral and ethical without religion, I believe you can make your own purpose, and I believe I set my own path. There is no “God’s plan” It is my plan.

I give myself strength, all that.

That is how I personally would define spirituality. But, everyone has their own view. I just believe I am in control. I don’t need otherwordly help. Religion is all cool and all, but it won’t save me from my trauma or hardships.

Edit: I also second Zaku. Connecting with your inner self and to the world around you is important and part of spirituality. Inner work.

Spirituality is having faith in something beyond the material that enables someone to experience a personality change to overcome difficulties.

Spirituality is being content with what you have, a skill almost entirely lost in the western world.
