Do you know anyone who has suffered a small subdural hematoma, and how long did it take for them to recover?

I was out on a frozen lake Saturday and slipped and fell hard on the back of my head. I blacked out for a bit and woke up to someone asking if I was okay. I ended up in the ER. The CT scan showed a very small subdural hematoma. The did another scan five hours to see if the bleeding grew. It was the same so the sent me home with anti seizure medication. I’m supposed to see a neurologist in two weeks.

I currently don’t have health insurance so I don’t even know if I can make an appointment. I just might have to go back to the ER instead because they can’t refuse me.

I’m in a lot of pain. I have trouble finding the right words at times and I’m not the steadiest on my feet. These aren’t new symptoms so I don’t need to return to the ER yet, but if it gets worse I will need to.

How long will this take for me to heal? I’m just looking for general advice from those who’ve experienced something similar. I understand no two cases will be the same.

Sounds like you’re still undergoing the effects of a concussion. If you’re experiencing headaches and having trouble finding words I recommend going back to the hospital.

A friend of mine was in an accident with me and hit her head and it resulted in a subdural hematoma. Hers was worse than yours, she was borderline whether to do surgery or wait it out. One surgeon recommended the surgery, but she chose to wait.

The hospital actually missed it at first and were calling it a concussion. She was nauseas, bad headache, and finally a few days into her hospitalization they did another CT and found the bleed. They quickly put her into the ICU from a regular room. She was hospitalized for 14 days. She wouldn’t eat, so they had to feed her through a tube if I remember correctly.

She had some permanent damage, can’t smell or taste, and gets dizzy still sometimes. It might have been from the actual hit and not the bleed, I’m not sure. I would think it must depend on where the hit is in the brain.

I venture to guess if you had insurance they would have kept you for observation.
