A subsidy is when the government gives financial assistance in one form or another, for example to a business, or to farmers, to give them aid.

A deficit is an accounting shortcoming, compared to what one might want to break even. For example, if you spend more than your budget, the difference is a budget deficit. A trade deficit, is when you compare the amount of money being paid out in trade with another country (or countries), compared to the amount of money being paid in in trade (so e.g. if America buys lots of foreign goods, but can’t sell as much value in stuff from America to other countries, then it will have a “trade deficit”). These are of course terms of economics and accounting, and relevant mainly from a perspective of economic theory.

Trump is a bit of an idiot, and despite his focus on business, I wouldn’t expect him to actually understand either concept very well.

A subsidy is an intentional perk, often to give some industry a boost until economies of scale can be established. A trade deficit is just where one country imports more than it exports. There are often negative consequences for the import heavy country when this happens.

Then why does The Don Father view a trade deficit as a subsidy?

A subsidy is when Canada agrees to sell oil to the US at less than market price.
A deficit is where a county imports 500 million tons of steel but only exports 8 suggesting it needs more than it produces.
