What do you think would be the ideal end to the Russia/Ukraine war?

Asked by jca2 (17116points) 3 days ago

As far as negotiations go, what do you think would be ideal?

I know I would love to see Russia go home and everything that was Ukrainian go back to Ukraine, but since it’s a negotiation, like any negotiation, it has to be a give and take.

What do you think would work for both sides?

Putin is assassinated, his successor capitulates, all currently occupied territories, including Crimea, are returned to Ukraine, Russia pays reparations for the atrocities they committed and damage they caused, Russia returns all the POWs they took and have not murdered yet, and all the children they abducted. Following that, Ukraine is immediately admitted into NATO, because that is the only security guarantee worth a damn. That is the ideal and most importantly just outcome.

Putin might just might agree keeping the land he took in this invasion and NATO committing to never accepting Ukraine as member. I maybe simply being naive with this thought.

I don’t think Ukraine would find this deal ideal.

@mazingerz88
He would just rebuild his forces, fortify his position in the occupied territories, and invade again in a couple of years, now with a much shorter distance to the capital.

^^Of course. But it just might buy time for Ukraine to build nuclear weapons and fight to the radioactive death with Russia. If they can’t have their country Putin shouldn’t have his either. Just one grim scenario.

I would bet my arse a ban on nuclear weapons for Ukraine would also be part of any “peace deal” “negotiated” by the orangutan and putin. Together with a sizeable “demilitarised” zone, solely on remaining Ukranian territory, of course, so Russia can take more land uncontested in the first days of the next invasion.

No ideal end then. EU could ( not sure if they have the wherewithal money wise ) support Ukraine in a war of more attrition until who knows…an anti-Putin American President is elected.

Russia pulls back in the south, along the Black Sea and along the Azov sea entirely. Russia pulls out of the north to the original border. Russia gets to keep the area to the East that was the start of the whole thing. Ukraine stays out of NATO. And both sides sign an agreement of no aggression for 100 years.

@mazingerz88 Europe also has to contend right now with right-wing extremist parties gaining strength, who are all connected to, funded by, and in support of Putin. And being boosted by Musk and Vance, who want to see Europe slide back into fascism, just as the Colonies currently are. As such, the current governments will be reluctant to offer too much support to Ukraine, lest they give more ammunition to the fascists and neonazis.

It turns out Navalny isn’t dead after all. He takes part in elections and is victorious. The war ends and Ukraine is rebuilt.

Zelensky already suggested Russia returns the land they took, and Ukraine returns the land they took from Russia. That’s better than Russia deserves.

Ideally, the pro-war faction in Moscow would also be overthrown internally, and replaced with much more sane leadership for Russia.

I can’t even imagine what both Putin and Zelenski would actually agree to. I like @ragingloli’s answer, I gave it a GA.

If Ukraine does give up any land the people there get to choose to move to Ukrainian territory.

The return of the children who were stolen by Russia. Have any of them been returned?

An understanding that if Russia invades again UN nations will come to the aide of Ukraine. I don’t understand backing down on helping Ukraine. A big threat would have more chance to stop Russia I think. The US promised to help Ukraine if they needed help. Other European countries are rightfully nervous about Putin going beyond Ukraine.

Putin gets hung by a mob of mothers whose sons were killed in Ukraine.

This is sheer lunacy from Trump:

:Later Tuesday, Mr. Trump said of Ukraine’s leadership and the war, “You should have never started it,” and appeared to embrace what has been a Russian demand that Ukraine hold elections before some stages of talks. Elections were suspended under martial law after Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

Mr. Trump also said that Mr. Zelensky’s approval rating was 4 percent. Mr. Zelensky said that was not true, citing polls showing far higher support.

At the news conference, Mr. Zelensky was focused and spoke with intensity. He said he was not personally ruffled by the negotiations with the Trump administration. “This is not my first dialogue or fight,” he said. “I take it calmly.

Russia, he said, is clearly pleased with the turn of diplomatic developments. “I think Putin and the Russians are very happy, because questions are discussed with them,” Mr. Zelensky said.

@jca2
He has completely allied with Putin, and is wholly under his control.
The Orangutan and Putin are having their “negotiations” in Saudi Arabia without Ukraine present. Even the Saudis wanted Ukraine at the table, but the Orangutan and Putin said “no”.
They are carving up Ukraine like Hitler and Stalin carved up Poland.
Adolf still had to stage a false flag on that radio station to blame Poland for the invasion, yet today the Orangutan can just declare it, and the muttonheaded muppets that are his supporters will just believe it without question.
