In hindsight, what is one of the dumbest things you ever did?
I was thinking back on my life and remembered a time, when I was in Idaho, that I and a couple friends saw a moose off the road a few hundred yards. So we stopped to get pictures. Of course today’s cameras were not created and I was dealing with a 110 instamatic. Guaranteed crappy pictures from where we were. So I moved closer. And closer. Pretty soon I was about 15 feet from the moose. It was a mama and her baby was on the other side of her. She was eating slime out of the bottom of a waterhole. I approached slowly and calmly. Eventually she raised her head to look at me and I stopped and spoke softly to her. She considered and went back to eating again. I took another step and she raised up again to look. More gentle talking and she went back to eating. Eventually she figured I was close enough and just turned away with her baby. I went the other way and was happy with the encounter. But looking back, I’m completely lucky I wasn’t trampled to death.
That was one of the dumber things I ever did. Anyone else want to share?

Getting into a stand up argument with someone who was robbing me at gun point while I was working in a bookies in the 90’s.
Telling them that if he was going to shoot me again he had better hope he killed me after shoting me in the head point blank. (it turned out it was an an ancient 22 that had been deactivated and then rebuilt by someone who probably didn’t know what they were doing firing hand loaded rounds that were a bit shit and the whole thing was probably more dangerous to the person who was holding it but it did leave aa bit of scratch on the side of my head). The guy wet him self then sat in the corner and waited for the police,
I had to go on a course on what to do when you were robbed. Appartantly not that.
I was on vacation with friends. Our first night there, we took some food to the beach, looking at the sea and watching the sunset while eating. We then agreed to come back for breakfast to watch the sun rise at the same spot, over the same ocean.
Marrying the woman I did. In retrospect, bad mistake.
Passenger in drag races with the guys several times. Fun but gery stupid.
Getting pulled over underage with a trunk full of liquor. My besties dad almost lost his dealer license (we poured it out at the liquor store.)
Riding with drinking friends.
@elbanditoroso Sorry, same.
Being under 24, and letting a 30 year old woman with a kid talk me into marrying her haha.
Giving up my chance to go to grad school for the sake of a man. The man is long gone. I’d still have the Ph.D.
I also married the wrong guy. Cheating jerk. I found out only after he died.
I have a lot of regrets. The biggest are not having kids, not buying a house that I could have had 5 years ago, and not going to an orthodontist immediately when a bad job was done on a bonded tooth. These three things can never be corrected to satisfaction and have long lasting implications.
@longgone I did a spit take reading your response, today you win the internet! :-D
@Jeruba Come back home, Sweetie, we’ll embrace your return!!
I was thinking about this for a while and the things I can think of were that when I was young (early 20s), and hanging out, bored, if I was with friends who wanted drugs, I would drive them. I always had a car (probably because I didn’t spend my money on drugs lol) and on two occasions, we were pulled over in the Bronx. I would have been in big trouble because they were in my car. One time when we were pulled over, it was near Yankee Stadium (big drug neighborhood) and I accidentally made a right on red, which was ok in the city I lived in but not in NYC (which the Bronx is part of). The cops didn’t get out of the car, I told them I was lost, looking for Yankee Stadium and they told me how to get there and we went on our way.
The other time I was with a girlfriend and I don’t know what I did, but we got pulled over, also in the Bronx. In those days, you could get out of the car and talk to the cops, and the main question was “what are two white girls doing in this neighborhood?” They were telling us that a girl got raped in that neighborhood the week before. We were saying we were going to visit a friend and they asked where the friend lived, and we were explaining but we didn’t know an address. Luckily, we talked our way out of it, and maybe from being young and cute and making jokes it helped us, and they told us to go back to ____________ and we did.
I would have been in big, big trouble for drugs and I didn’t even do them.
@seawulf575: I posted a video on my FB page a few days ago of a snowmobiler who got stomped by a moose. He went over to the moose and the moose attacked him. There was another video on FB where the guy filming it was talking, and the moose was close, and licking its lips and giving him the side eye and then starts moving quickly. All of a sudden the filming stops, Presumably the moose attacked him. They say when a moose licks its lips and shows the whites of its eyes, that’s a sign that it’s stressed out.
@jca2 I worked with two guys when I was in Idaho that went hunting all the time. One time Bob (not his real name) shot a deer. When he went to tag it, Jim (not his name) shouted out that there was a moose! Bob ran off and, laughing, Jim tagged the deer like he had shot it. Bob was a bit annoyed but they had a good laugh. Another time they went out and this time Jim shot the deer. It fell on a game trail and Jim went to tag it. Bob shouted out that there was a moose! Jim laughed and continued to tag the deer. But he looked up and saw a mama moose on the trail, looking angry. He turned to run and realized the mama’s baby was behind him…he was between the two. Mama charged and Jim managed to jump up into a tree before she got there. Mama went on to baby and off they went. Thankfully nobody got hurt, but Bob certainly got his revenge. And yes, he tagged the deer after the moose left.
