Why are people so obsessed with politicians?

Asked by MakeItSo1701 (13876points) 1 month ago

Both sides, mainly with Trump.

And yes both sides, and if you don’t know what I mean, yes you do.

Both sides bring him up over the dumbest of things. Every conversation with my dad, he gets brought up.

I see democrats on social media, “Oh, Ben&Jerry made this new flavor? If Trump made an ice cream flavor…”

Like he lives rent free in everyones minds? It feels obsessive as hell. I don’t think I have ever thought about Trump unprompted. I don’t like him so I try to stay away, not constantly reference him?

No different than with Conservatives and Biden. Trump is worse because people were still obsessing over him during Biden anyways.

Generically, politicians are a concern to many because what politicians do can impact us all so much. Trump holds a particular hold on many because of all the efforts to block him.

Since he started running in 2015, he was targeted because he was not a DC insider. The smears started coming out. At the time, the MSM (ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, etc) all were mouthpieces for the Democrat party. So they spun all sorts of lies an innuendo against Trump. When he won, suddenly it was Russia Collusion that did it. That was created by the Democrats and pushed by the media. The story was suddenly that he was a Russia plant and didn’t deserve to be POTUS. To the average American this sounded really bad. And he was President!!!

This behavior carried on all through his first term and into his second effort in 2020. Anything he did or said was twisted so it could be viewed as a negative. And at the same time, anything negative about a Democrat was covered up. It’s called propaganda. This worked to split the country significantly. One side felt that nothing President Trump said or did could ever by right and the other side questioned “the narrative”.

By about 2 years into Biden’s presidency, many people were realizing the game that was going on. The trust in the media was severely lessened and the Democrats weren’t doing anything for Americans. So again, looking at politicians, the people started seeing that things weren’t really as bad as they were told during Trump’s first term and weren’t nearly as good as they were being told about Biden’s. So things needed to change.

People frequently forget that all politicians are flawed creatures because they are humans. We are all flawed creatures. But the decisions that politicians make can have broad reaching impact on all people in the country and into the world. And often, the average Joe looks at it from a very small lens. If you go to fill up the tank on your car and you see the gas price is 50 cents more per gallon than it was a couple weeks before, you start to realize this is an impact on your budget. When food prices start soaring, this is another impact on your budget. People see things that are impacting them directly and tend to blame the politicians because it is the decisions the politicians are making that are often causing the problems. We sometimes forget that it might not be the guy/gal that is currently in office that is responsible and we often forget that Congress really needs to be held more accountable. We just love having one target, though.

Our politicians have direct power over our lives. When that power is abused, it negatively affects us.
That’s why.

Excellent answer @canidmajor short and the absolute truth.

I was just coming on to say because they affect every aspect of our lives but I see that @canidmajor has said the same thing.

What @canidmajor said.

Also, most people in the US don’t have a coherent politics or class consciousness, reducing politics to personalities. The corporate media plays this up, and we end up supporting/opposing people rather than policy. That’s how people can suddenly shift support of policy based on who they see as the ones implementing it.

“Both sides bring him up over the dumbest of things.” “Oh, Ben&Jerry made this new flavor? If Trump made an ice cream flavor…”

Happens here too…pretty much every day. You probably know who. And yes, it’s often because politicians have a negative effect when they do things that hurt the majority of the people. And some people just love to talk about them.

I get how important politicians are. Doesn’t justify bringing them up during every conversation that does not involve politics. Thats what I am saying. Not just bringing it up in general.

My examples are what I mean. Like, if you need to talk about Trump when somone casually mentions the weather, you have problems. Those are the people I mean. That is not normal no matter how you look at it.

I guess I have better things to do with my life.

^^ You’ve put succinctly what many of us think.

I suspect you are on the wrong website. Many on these pages cannot help but bring Trump into every topic.

Because fascism only gets stronger in the dark. Americans should be concerned about the current political climate, whether it affects you personally or not at the moment, because eventually it will affect everyone.

They’re unhappy, unintelligent and lack any personality of their own. Someone has to say it.

@MakeItSo1701 You used to love trump. What happened?

MakeItSo1701's avatar

Not sure I have ever “loved” Trump? Was a conservative sure, but I grew up and so I am not a fucking idiot anymore.

Not sure my past politics matters anymore.

Growing up in an ultra conservative household does that to you. It’s a wonder I even grew up enough to think for myself with how I was raised.

People talked a lot about Hitler when he was around too. Funny thing.

He’s the public face of a plutocratic/fascist takeover of the United States, is all. Gets attention from “both” sides.

His main schtick is spewing idiotic and outrageous, offensive, and destructive bait that ruins lives and ways of life.

What don’t you understand?

Like the same way conservatives were always bringing up Biden?

Everyone needs a hobby. Mine used to be comics, until I got put on anti-psychotics for being too much into them.

YARNLADY's avatar

Unfortunately your premise in incorrect. Most people do not know anything about politicians and don’t care. They cannot name their government representatives at any level, city, county, state or federal, much less know, or care, there are levels.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Politicians can start wars . . Hitler . . Emperor of Japan are examples.

Trump may be a world war starter ! !

YARNLADY's avatar

@Tropical_Willie The real perpetrators will be happy to see their scapegoat blamed.

@MakeItSo1701 What I don’t understand, is why anyone who can form complete sentences, would also be asserting a false equivalency where they try to paint Trump as just “a politician”, and even to suggest:

“No different than with Conservatives and Biden.”

Really? You don’t get it?

Because Trump and Musk are literally dismantling our government. They are suppressing medical information, they are going through our private information, they are attempting to make it so that certain (non white) people who were born in the U.S. will not be considered citizens. They are spreading fear among people of color by suggesting that they don’t “belong” here, or are sub human to white people, or are not smart enough to work in certain jobs. In other words: racism. They are telling females that they have no autonomy over their bodies, and that they are less capable than men, and should not be considered for certain jobs, in other words: sexism. They are firing highly qualified government workers as if they are expendable, making the outcome of their work less safe, less accurate, or not possible at all. These mass firings have come without warning, and are forcing the unemployment rate to go up, and disrupting families.

They are appointing people to extremely important positions of power that do not have the background, experience, or knowledge of how to do these jobs. It is as if they rounded up a bunch of clowns as some kind of big joke on all of us. It’s unexplainable and frightening.

With all of these situations, and others that have already happened, or will happen, they affect real people. It’s not just speculation, idle chit chat, or gossip. Those of us who talk about them “constantly” read, listen to, and watch the news, and seek out accurate information, instead of ignoring it, so that we can be prepared for the worst, or try to find solutions to help us get out of this mess, if not for ourselves, then for our family, our friends, our communities, and our citizenry.

We also want to save our country from becoming a fascist state, or a dictatorship, or an oligarchy. We want to save our Constitution that our ancestors created and fought for, and for which they gave great care in creating so that our citizens could live in a fair society, and a just society, one free from oppression. We want to save our citizens from being subjected to treatment that is outside of the law, and to keep them safe.

Right now, a lot of us are scared, and worried, and sad, and angry. Why on earth would we not talk about that and the two people who are responsible for terrorizing our citizenry???

Blackwater_Park's avatar

I think we have two factions fighting it out right now and it has nothing to do with partisan politics. With sleepy Joe, everything went quiet yet we were seemingly sliding into WWIII. Appears like the military-industrial complex was in control. Stirring shit up quietly in the background is their M.O. Now we have the rich tech oligarchs who don’t stand to profit from a wartime economy. They require geopolitical stability and a weaker more controlled Gov’t.
