Can someone please explain Chongqing to me?

I am having a hard time understanding how it is layered like this. How did they build this? This seems out of this world.

I am not sure how much more details to add. The link is in the post. However, this city has multiple levels to it, and thousands of stairs. I think it is built between mountains. What I don’t get, is how they built the city, and why it is so complex. I cannot seem to find that much information.

Another example that the US is not the only thriving Nation.
It’s is built on sandstone. Much of the old lanes are no longer.

It’s an awkward location for a city being so mountainous but then the whole area is mountainous and Chongqing is a natural trading centre because it lies where two major rivers meet, the Jialing and the Yangtze. Chongqing was almost completely rebuilt last century going from a wooden low level city to the city of high rise buildings you see today.
PS I flew into Chongqing last night.
