@MakeItSo1701 Because I surmised that @RedDeerGuy1 would benefit from seeing a visual representation of his assertion.

Well, and I got something out of it too. I was immediately pretty sure that it wasn’t going to be anywhere near something that’d be available in a couple of years, but I didn’t really have a sense of just how far off it was, until I looked at the scale of the difference. It’s even hard to appreciate fully unless you zoom out the screen so it will fit all on one screen. (i.e. keep hitting Ctrl & – until it zooms out far enough, if your browser and screen will even zoom that far out!)

Too many variables.

Are we talking all languages, or just English?

Are we talking PDF (which are bloated and large) or MOBI or some other format?

Are we talking pictures in JPG (fairly good on space) or RAW format, or something larger?

In the end, storing 150 million books is just the start. You need to build indexes so you can find the damn things. So add another 15–20% overhead.

I would estimate about 10MB per book. That comes to 1.52 petabytes.

I have an epub copy of Through the Looking Glass (Alice in Wonderland) with illustrations . It’s 4MB. 152 million x 4MB = 608 terabytes.

It’s black & white. Color illustrations would take up more room. And of course books with no illustrations would use less.

I would call it a petabyte, leaving some room for more books.

Average Kindle e-book is 2.6MB, which is a HUGE data set on many file types of different book file sizes, so 2,600,000 *152,000,000 = 395.2GB. They’ll fit on a large capacity thumb drive.
