What are your favorite Westerns?
I’ve been on a Western kick recently. I rewatched The Magnificent Seven, Once Upon a Time in the West, Fistful of Dollars, True Grit (both versions), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
What are some of your favorites? TV Series like Deadwood (great) are allowed as answers.

I liked any of the Trinity westerns.
The good the bad and the ugly, hands down the best western ever made
Unforgiven and Pale Rider are another couple that are in my top 5.
Lesser known would be Open Range
The “Oh yeah, that’s a western” category goes to Django Unchained.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
@hat Never heard of Dead Man. It gets good reviews on Letterboxd and is on Criterion and Max. I’ll put it on my watch list, thanks!
For those of you who have mentioned the Man with No Name trilogy, I agree, Good Bad and the Ugly is the best of the three. I wasn’t as much of a fan of Fistful of Dollars as it was just a remake of Yojimbo. But I still think I like Once Upon a Time in the West better.
@Blackwater_Park Pale Rider I wasn’t as much of a fan of but Unforgiven is probably the greatest Western ever made. Never heard of Open Range. I’ll put it on my watchlist.
I don’t think technically its a western, but it takes place in the west: The Power of the Dog.
@Caravanfan Open Range was a Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner film. A bit of a lower budget cult classic. To “get” Pale Rider, you need to first see High Plains Drifter
@Blackwater_Park Ah. That might be the issue, I never saw High Plains Drifter. I’ll stick them on my list and give them a shot. Thanks!
High Noon is a classic. I’ve seen it several times.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
The Wild Bunch (1969)
A Fistful of Dollars (1964)
For a Few Dollars More (1965)
A Fistful of Dynamite, AKA Duck, You Sucker (1971)
Two Mules for Sister Sara
Blazing Saddles
Little Big Man
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Rango (animated)
1883 (series)
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly.
Unforgiven.
Stagecoach (1939).
True Grit.
The Searchers.
High Noon.
Old Henry.
Dances With Wolves.
Silverado.
Tombstone.
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon.
Gunfight At The O.K. Corral.
The Legend Of Buster Scruggs.
The Hateful Eight.
Outrage.
Winchester 73.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.
Little Big Man.
Lonesome Dove – 3 part series.
The Outlaw Josie Wales
Dead Man was one of those that is a bit weird. Good, but weird.
Anything that Clint was in.
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Sons of Katie Elder
@Kardamom Rango was animated by a friend of mine.
@all thanks. You all might be interested in this and it’s a bit of a crossover. There was a recent run of the comic Supergirl by Tom King that was basically a remake of True Grit. It will be a movie next year—not sure how close it will be to the story.
@flutherother High Noon was remade into a Sean Connery science fiction film called “Outland”
@filmfann Searchers was a tough watch for me. It’s probably John Wayne’s best role but the character was so racist in the film it was jaw dropping.
@Zaku I’ve heard Blazing Saddles being called “The film that killed the Western”
@Forever_Free I love that everybody misquotes Sierra Madre. They say “We don’t need no stinking badges”. And that’s not the line.
@Caravanfan Such a great movie
“Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don’t need badges. I don’t have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned cabrĂ³n and chinga tu madre! Come out there from that shit-hole of yours. I have to speak to you.”
Yeah, there were some other good pseudo-Westerns that I almost added, such as:
Duel (1971)
Seven Samurai (1954)
Yojimbo (1961)
Rustler’s Rhapsody (1985)
My all time favorite western movie is Cowboys. Has anyone else here seen it?
@Zaku Well, Seven Samurai was remade into The Magnificent Seven, and Yojimo was remade into A Fistful of Dollars.
For a fusion western, you can do Shanghai Noon. Crosses western with kung fu with comedy.
Shanghai Noon…Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan. Lots of fun.
