Is it worth the effort to earn $300?
I keep getting advertisements from Chase bank to open new accounts with them. (I’m happy with my current credit union and have no real reason to change).
The latest ad offers a $300 bonus if I open a savings account and let $15000 sit there for 90 days. Their savings interest rate is .01%. So after 90 days I would have earned a whopping 37 cents in interest.
BUT if you do the math, their $300 bonus for account opening means that the real interest rate I would be earning is 8.1%, which is a much different incentive.
Is it worth the effort to open an account and close if after 90 days to earn 8%?

I would bet there is something in the contract to prevent just that kind of scheme.
Do study the contract, but I think you can do this. They just have statistics that most people don’t (and so in the long run, they end up getting more from people overall in other ways, on average), despite them having offered that forever. (Well, actually, I think it used to be like $150 if you set up regular direct deposits into a checking account, and another $150 for something like you’re contemplating, total advertised as $300.)
I would read all of the fine print first. If you only have to deposit and leave it there, then do it. I think you will find there are other requirements than just making a deposit and letting it sit.
Yeah, it’s worth it if you can pull the money out in 90 days and you do it. I get offers like this and rarely brother, but once in a while I go ahead and do it.
Just make sure you can close the account in 90 days and walk away with your $300.
That’s about the same rate as putting it in a short term (6 month) CD (5% int rate)
Chase is hoping you’ll not bother to take the money out after they give you the $300. You’ll have to keep checking your balance too because if you wait for the paper statement to come out, that’s another 2–3 weeks.
