What goods will you stock up on before usa-canada-mexico tariffs and counter tariffs take effect?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (25224points) 1 month ago

I just heard, on Bloomberg Commodities Thurs March 6th, that 80% of Canada’s oatmeal is 95% of American imports of oatmeal.

Do you intend to stock up, before April 2nd?

My fridge is full, so I can’t stock up any more.

If I am wrong than can you correct me?

I’m not stocking up on anything.
The only short-term shortage is on booze, and I don’t drink.

No, not planning to take steps like that. For one thing, it’s an even bet that the tariffs won’t go into effect in their present form, if at all.

Secondly, even if there are tariffs on stuff from Mexico or Canada, the effect will be imperceptibly small on me. If a box of oatmeal goes from 1.00 to 1.15 – that’s negligible. I spend more than that driving to the supermarket.

But realistically, politics is going to catch up to the idiot-in-chief, and he’s going to have to roll back some of these asinine new policies.

No. I have a lot of food in the house and I buy a lot from Costco, which keeps prices low.

I’m not stocking up. Who knows what’s going to happen with all the fur flying? I can adjust my buying if need be.

Interestingly enough, I did buy cases of oatmeal from Amazon a while back because they were a really good deal and I know I will use them over time. I wasn’t even thinking about tariffs at the time but just the fact that they were saying groceries were going to go up and I wanted to have a little bit of extra stuff on hand.

None, really, other than the normal stocking up I do in Alaska. That’s more in the fall than this time of year though, though do try to stay ahead on dog food and such. It’s one thing for me to run out of my favorite snack but heaven help me if I run out of my not at all spoiled dog’s favorite treat. Grin.

Lumber for projects that I am planning for the next couple years.

None. Everyone hoarding food will raise prices even if a tariff never happens.

The terrorists who hate America have been using supply scares for a few years now. I’m total conspiracy theory on this. I think they know exactly what they are doing and start messaging across social media. Now you have the US president in bed with some of the domestic and foreign terrorists.

@Forever_Free Lumber would be an exception in my flat out rejection. I think that’s smart.

I bought some extra maple syrup this week. Apparently a lot of US syrup is imported before bottling and they also rely on Canada for processing equipment.

By coincidence I just bought a big maple syrup last week. I bought the store brand, I hope I like it.

So expensive already, I can’t imagine paying much more for it. I had a guest staying with me for several weeks a few months ago and he was using my maple syrup in his tea. I kept thinking that’s an expensive tea. Lol.

I get 33 ounces Kirkland (Costco) brand organic maple syrup for 12.99 at Costco. When I get a new one, it lasts a long time.

Tuesday Trump announces 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Stock market dropping fast. Trump fucks our friends the Canadians and fucks the US with tariffs.
