Can new people join the collective?

Asked by JLeslie (65993points) 1 month ago from iPhone

A Q not long ago mentioned we aren’t accepting new jellies, is that true? I want to suggest fluther to a friend of mine. I don’t want to suggest it if it won’t let her sign up.

If you don’t get a definitive answer, you can go to a computer where you don’t have the Fluther password saved, and try to join as a new member and see what happens.

Signing up by herself won’t work, but we can set up an account for her. So she’d have to contact a mod.

@longgone, is that going to be the case from now on?

@longgone Thank you for your answer. That extra step seems like a deterrent, but I am glad the option exists. More work for you and the other mods. I will tell her about fluther and see if she will join. I will message you if she says she might join so you have her name.

@longgone That sounds like a sensible way to proceed and much less work than fielding spam and bots all day!

I was thinking that same thing @Janbb.

How can she contact a mod if she doesn’t have an account and cannot make one?

@MakeItSo1701

I just logged out, and the Contact button still worked for me.
I just had to enter Name, Email, Verify Email, and Feedback.

The difference is that if one has an account, those fields autofill.

@Brian1946 I don’t think the “Contact” button goes to the mods anymore . . .

I’m with @MakeItSo1701 !

Invitation only seems like a reasonable thing. It means that @longgone has to do more work, though.

janbb's avatar

@Caravanfan But not more work than fighting bots and spam every day was!

[mod says] Yes, it is an extra step, and it’s annoying for potential new jellies. Certainly a deterrent. Unfortunately, it’s still necessary at the moment because Fluther just doesn’t have the protections it needs. The internet changes quickly, and by going so long without updates, Fluther is becoming much more vulnerable to attacks.

Some very good news though: We now have tech support! This is a very recent development, and it’s really exciting. The idea is to work on the more pressing issues immediately (fixing the recurring server issues, for example). Then, there’s a long list of other issues to fix. At least in my mind, opening Fluther up again is high on that list. It might be complicated, and it might take a while. Still, definitely reason to be hopeful!

I know that when I tried to create a new account due to my current one not working I saw that it was more difficult to do so.
