Do dogs think we are nuts?
When my dogs do that super sniff I super sniff them back. They like sniff me really fast. I don’t get in their face, I am not trying to antagonize. They look at me like I am weird.
My girl dog always has one ear up. Not permanently, just whenever she hears a noise. It’s like she is perpetually curious even though she’s 3 and has heard these noises so many times. I wonder if it’s because she thinks we are crazy. She has one ear up and tilts her head at me like “why are you like this?”

Do dogs have that level of higher analytical thought? Can they determine ‘normal behavior’ and then identify aberrant behavior?
Doubt it.
Are you sure? I would think any animal can tell what is normal or not. If I suddenly started talking with a British accent, that would prompt a weird stare.
I always wonder if cats have words for things in their every day lives, like food, bed, sleep.
My cats would immediately perk up if I asked if they wanted supper. One of them would come running if I asked if she wanted tuna juice. She loved it; the other one didn’t care, she liked bread. Yeah, bread.
Yes, my 14 year old rescue shelter has told me that every single day now for 14 years.
That is crazy^ I wish my dogs would be that honest.
@smudges I ask my cats “Are you kids ready for your dinner?” and they go into a frenzy. I wonder if it’s the way I say it, and not the words themselves.
^^ I think they learn the word, but probably not the whole sentence. I could just say supper with a questioning tone and they’d know. They learn words like dogs do, by association. I could ask her if she wanted to go for a walk and she’d get very excited, maked that trilling noise and run to the door.
Aren’t animals wonderful?
My first question is why do you sniff them in their face? My observation is sniffing takes place at the other end.
Good point. I will sniff their asshole next time.
No, they think “Where are my nuts, Summer?”.
SciTechDaily – 10 Mar 2025 – New research reveals that humans are surprisingly bad at reading their dogs’ emotions
People do not look at what the dog is doing, instead they look at the situation surrounding the dog and base their emotional perception off of that,” said Molinaro, an ASU Ph.D. student in psychology and animal welfare scientist.
“Our dogs are trying to communicate with us, but we humans seem determined to look at everything except the poor pooch himself,” added Wynne, an ASU psychology professor who studies dog behavior and the human-dog bond.
“Adding to the misunderstanding is a human projection of their feelings onto the dog. This “anthropomorphizing” of the interaction further clouds truly understanding what your dog’s emotional state actually may be, what she is trying to tell you.
The short video in the link, with the vacuum cleaner, illustrates the concept nicely.
My first question is why do you sniff them in their face?
I have no dogs of my own, but I do air kisses with my best dog friends. They lap the air at me.They’ll lick my face if I get close enough, but near-contact will suffice.
These are the dogs that go bananas when I visit, doing that funny teeth-baring smile thing and whimpering until they get enough petting.
Does that mean my dog does not love me?
Despite the study I linked above, I have no doubt that dogs and humans share real love.
We can misread particular situations, but I say the love and friendship is indisputable.
I watched a documentary on dogs and saw that. They know how to manipulate <3
