Khalil was arrested by ICE and is being detained, he is accused of being aligned with Hamas. He was part of the demonstrations at Columbia University regarding Gaza.
He’s Syrian in the US currently on a Green Card, but at the time of the protests on Columbia campus he was in the US on a student visa. I assume he now has a Green Card that is attached to being married to an American. I don’t know how long ago he got married or how long ago he was issued a green card, but from what I understand his wife is 9 months pregnant. As I said, my research shows he had a student visa on Oct 7th, 2023 and either part or all of the time during the protests.
Many people are very upset he was arrested and feel it is Trump’s administration trying to quiet people from speaking out, take away the public’s right of freedom of speech and feel safe in voicing disagreement with people in power. An understandable concern that I share, but I find myself wanting to know more detail about Khalil before making a decision.
This video is done by someone who is pro-Israel, I would say biased, he is Israeli, American, and Jewish. He is not anti-Arab.
That’s the set-up to the video that I now ask you to watch. He has clips and quotes of Khalil since Oct 7th that give more information to the story. https://youtu.be/f372zLkx0iI?si=-XnW3Xak6AKJ30rR
The beginning he is basically saying deport Khalil, but if you get past that you will see the clips for yourself.

@janbb I think the question at hand is whether to let him be a permanent resident in the US and on a path to citizenship. Would you go to a country on a temporary visa and speak out against the government and expect that country to put you on a path to citizenship? He isn’t a citizen. Maybe you would expect it, I’m just asking.
I certainly don’t agree with jailing people for speaking their mind, but making them residents or citizens is a different question.
He already had a green card so he is a permanent resident. And that’s all I really have to say about this.
If we deport Khalil, we also have to deport Elon Musk.
If he was let in with his known past, it seems like he should have constitutional protections if theres no crime.
Retroactively naming him a terrorist, not so sure that I approve.
I’d rather have him in my country than musk who is saying that Hitler did not kill the Jewish people.
Prior to his studies at Columbia, Khalil worked for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and held a senior position at the UK office for Syria in Lebanon, roles that required rigorous security clearance. He moved to the United States in 2022 to pursue his master’s degree.
The arrest occurred at Khalil’s university residence, not while protesting.
I would argue that targeting activists like Khalil sets a dangerous precedent for civil liberties and the right to protest.
Honestly, this is just more of the fascism that started during the Biden admin and has been made even more egregious under the Trump admin. This is the kind of thing we’d use as an excuse to sanction or invade a country. The US has explicitly rescinded the freedom of speech. And is engaged in literal dystopian novel shit.
The US is declaring that it should not exist. Over and over again.
Fuck Israel and the US. At this point, we can only hope that another country invades the US and wins. We’re fucking done.
