How can I safetly eat a 5 - 10 servings of fruits, and vegetables a day?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (25223points) 4 weeks ago

To count towards my 5 – 10 servings of fruit, and vegetables.

I eat 6oz of raspberries each day.

What other fruits, and vegetables can I add?

I can’t eat califlower or broccoli, or cabbage. Also I can’t eat apples or grapefruit.

I was thinking pickles, and beets, but am open to new suggestions?

A big salad every day, with lots of veggies. Lots ofxred onion, broccoli, carrots, etc..
Then meat with side veggies for dinner.
Snacks are always fruit for me. Bananas, grapes, plums, oranges usually.
There are lots of meal tracker apps that can help you, too!

Some people prefer smoothies to get it all in without eating single portions.
There are also green/red supplements you can take on busy days or while traveling, which I really enjoy.

Get a juicer. Then you can juice all the veggies and fruits you want. You could even juice ahead…make enough all at one time for the next 3 days.

A serving is probably a half a cup, so six servings is three cups. You could probably easily eat a two cup salad at lunch and a cup of vegetables and fruit at dinner. Or do a salad and a piece of fruit at lunch and a cup of vegetables with dinner and a piece of fruit as a snack.

safely? Why would eating lots of vegetables not be safe?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Caravanfan In university I tried eating a vegan diet. I lost too much weight and almost died. I’m just cautious of major changes.

Also I tend to eat more fruit than vegetables.

@RedDeerGuy1
As long as you eat balanced and get all your necessary vitamins and proteins then you’re fine. If you’re trying to be a vegetarian that’s fine too, it just takes planning.

Don’t forget dried fruit like raisins. I googled and 5 ounces of raisins is a serving. I am sure you could put that amount on a bowl of oatmeal or cereal and that’s a serving of your fruit right there.

Also, you could put fresh fruit in yogurt and get a serving or two that way. I put berries (fresh raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and/or strawberries) on vanilla yogurt and I add walnuts for protein and texture.

@RedDeerGuy1 Given your past experience nearly killing yourself being vegan, as well as the many questions I remember from you over the years along the lines of “Can I just eat only [X]?”, I would recommend you find someone who can regularly check on your diet.

^^ Two thumbs up to that, and I’d bet there are free nutritionists in your area associated with the school. You could even do it by phone.

Can you take Metamucil Fiber Gummies ?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Yes. Last week I purchased Metamucil fiber powder. Haven’t opened the container yet.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Update I might try v8 vegetable cocktail, for my veggies.

My wife has me make her “Virgin Marys” like a Bloody Mary but no alcohol. Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, hot sauce and lime juice.

@RedDeerGuy1 V8 is not the best way to get your fiber. Part of the goal of eating a certain amount of fruit and vegetables each day is not just for nutrition, but for fiber.

I found this: https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/2023/01/19/is-v-8-juice-healthy/10997638002/

@jca2 Thanks. I am trying Metamucil and low sodium v8 for now. I will make changes as I go.

Apples have great fiber as do raw nuts.

Brian1946's avatar

If you like cherries, the pits are a bitchin’ source of fiber.

Why no cauliflower or broccoli? A couple of portions of cruciferous vegetables would do you a world of good.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@zenvelo They cause stomach pain.

Here is a description of the MIND diet plan, that boosts brain health. Link They give a meal plan for a week at the end of the article

Wrong link, try this

You could also make yourself some oatmeal in the mornings and put in some raisins, dried apricots, cut up apples or any other fruit you want (dried fruit or fresh fruit).

^^ Good choice. I put raisins in mine. Great for iron, not so great for diabetes 2. The “fruit” in Froot Loops is negligible, it’s just for color.
