Is it legal to grow poppies in the US?
Probably not opium poppies, but what about other variants?

I suggest to check the laws in you state or county. Opium poppies are a no but as for other poppies probably.
We have the lovely orange California poppies growing plentifully in their season. Just Google “California poppies” images for a brilliant eyeful.
There’s a persistent misconception that it’s illegal to cut or pick them in California. It isn’t, although there are some restrictions. It’s certainly not illegal to grow them. These and other poppy varieties grow wild across the state, as well as being cultivated on public and private land.
Fun fact: different government agencies disagree on whether or not it is legal to grow opium poppies (aka breadseed poppies aka Papaver somniferum) in the United States, and the DEA has frequently claimed full discretion to decide who is growing them legally and who is not (since they are still listed under Schedule II of the Controlled Substances Act).
All other types of poppy are unambiguously legal to grow in all 50 states, however, so no worries there.
@Jeruba What a gorgeous vibrant orange!
No. But lots of people grow them here, never a problem. A field may be a different story!
California poppies are California’s state flower. They grow wild all over the place in springtime. And yes, you are allowed to grow them. Opium poppies— no.
Depends on what the DEA feels that day
