General Question

The next summer Olympics is in summer 2028, in Los Angeles (and two events in Oklahoma!). Will you encourage your international friends and family to attend?

Would international travelers want to visit the US and have to ‘show their papers’ any time a policemen wanted?

Would they want to run the risk of imprisonment or deportation for visiting the US?

If your friends are gay or transgendered, would they even be allowed to enter the US?

Do you see the possibility of an international boycott of the 2028 Olympics (like the US did on Russia in 1980 after Russia invaded Afghanistan)?

Not even international athletes should attend.
Let the colonials compete only against themselves and the Russian delegation.
Maybe some special teams from Belarus, North Korea, and Israel.

I wouldn’t encourage my international friends to come to the Olympics at the best of times but a general boycott sounds reasonable.

I cannot think of a single thing that would get me to LA and no, I would not encourage anyone to go there for any reason.

I’m going to try to go with my friend and if we do we’ll camp on the floor of my daughter’s apartment. That’s the plan, at least. This weekend she said, “Dad, I may not even be there.” But I can dream.

Isnt that like encouraging people to visit Nazi Germany to attend the 1936 Olympics?

Forever_Free's avatar

Not a chance. This seems oddly familiar in timing to how the 1936 Olympics went down.

It doesn’t matter where the Olympics is, it sounds like a lot of crowds and surge pricing for hotels and flights. I would probably only go if I had a close friend or relative participating or friends who lived in the area that maybe I could crash with.

As far as coming into the US for travel and tourism, I don’t think it is as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. Sure, Trump and his people are being annoying, offensive, and maybe causing some more hassle; but overall, traveling to the US is probably still not a big deal if you have your proper visa, and most people get proper paperwork when they come to the US. People are still coming into our country every day on tourist visas from around the world.

I am not in favor of boycotting the Olympics. I see the Olympics as an opportunity for the young people of the world to come together, and to me that is a good thing. Also, I would not want to rob the athletes of their time to compete.

Sure, if you’re white.

janbb's avatar

@Caravanfan And have never protested for Palestinian rights.

@janbb
Even just writing an article in your college newspaper is too much now.
Or having negative opinions about Krasnov.

JLeslie's avatar

@Caravanfan People are still coming from everywhere, you can see it on the link. I didn’t look back at previous years to see if much fewer visas are being given.

I completely agree White Supremacists have infiltrated and are controlling our government now, it just doesn’t seem to be to the full extent of completely blocking people who aren’t “white” not yet anyway. Maybe you know something I don’t.

Edit: the majority of Canadians coming in are probably white and even Canadians are supposedly going to be fingerprinted crossing the border sometime in the future.

We have 6 people we know that are in Europe, 5 of the 6 moved back because of what was going on. The 6th has no use for Trump, the Turd. We will see no friends visit in 2028, or anytime in the next 7 years, Trump wants to run for the third time . . . “we don’t need no Constitution” Trump today! ! ! ! 3/30/2025

I have friends and acquaintances saying they won’t return next year because of Trump, but that’s different than Trump’s administration actually preventing them from coming.

The thought that if the paperwork gets fouled up you could spend the rest of your life in CECOT El Salvador rather than spending two weeks in Disneyworld Florida with the kids is offputting.

JLeslie's avatar

^^Valid. Although, I feel the same about being in any country that has horrific jails, don’t get caught doing anything wrong and hope you aren’t mistakenly identified. That’s all of Latin America and Asia. I won’t even include Eastern Europe, but you could, especially Russia.

The likelihood someone who has a tourist visa will suddenly be identified as a criminal without documents is extremely unlikely.

My husband used to stand on line for hours for his visa at the American embassy. Back then people even paid people to keep their place in lines, this is back in the ‘80’s I think. I don’t know how it is now.

tinyfaery's avatar

No no no no.

Do not come here. Stay away. Family and friends only.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Don’t worry about me, I have no intention of going.^

JLeslie's avatar

@tinyfaery Family and friends only? Why are they an exception? That’s probably the majority of the out of country audience anyway.

janbb's avatar

This was just posted by someone on FB so I don’t have the source but it seems believable:

“New:
Airlines report bookings from Canadians for April are down 76%. WestJet just cancelled some more USA bound flights and added a nonstop from Halifax to Barcelona.”

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@janbb That’s what we have been hearing on our news up here, there is a real American boycott here in Canada right now, the tariffs are one thing but DO NOT threaten to make us part of the states.
And no this is directed at you or any true American, But frightwingers and Magas can go screw themselves, Canada will always be it’s own country.

janbb's avatar

^^ Of course. It is idiotic to think otherwise no matter what he says.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@Tropical_Willie The boycott is gaining momentum people in droves are actively looking at what they are buying and NOT buying American made anything right now .
My wife and sister in-law are traveling to South America this fall, and purposely chose airlines that were not American, and didn’t want to stop in the states for any reason.
