How much longer can Cory Booker hold out?

Asked by Caravanfan (14281points) 1 day ago

It’s obviously a bit of political grandstanding but he’s been giving a speech now on the Senate floor for over 20 hours. Some Democratic colleagues have covered for him a bit while he went to take a leak but it’s a bit of political theater happening right now.

He’s sounding a bit delirious right now

I really admire him for what he’s doing! Anything that calls attention to what is going on is a help.

I agree.

Sen. Strom Thurmond spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes on the senate floor in 1957, a record.

@Jeruba I was thinking of the exact same thing! Great minds, my friend!

Is Corey going for Strom’s record? He’s making a point for sure!

Political theater but better than nothing. I don’t see anyone going to jail yet.

Actually I read he’s not allowed to take a break to take a leak, nor is he allowed to sit down. I’m guessing he has some sort of catheter attached with a leg bag, and that he has compression stockings on.

I think he’s going to make 24 hours plus—i.e., break the record. He’s at 23:12 now, by my calculation.

He may well beat Thurmond at this point, he’s 25 minutes away from the record.

I’d say this is a bit more than just political grandstanding.

@raum I agree. A bold statement needed to be made.

He’s auditioning for Obama’s old job.

He has beaten Thurmond! Bravo Cory! And go New Jersey!

And remember, what Thurmond was filibustering for was to interfere with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. This isn’t a filibuster, because he’s not stalling legislation, but it’s a solid statement in its own right. As I read it, Booker’s core message is ”Do something.

JLeslie's avatar

I guess that filibuster will go down in history.

Not long ago didn’t a lot of Democrats want to get rid of the filibuster? Are those same Democrats cheering on Booker?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@JLeslie it was NOT a Filibuster – - Filibuster is to block a vote – - like Strom Thurmond in 1957 to block voting for civil rights.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Oh he beat the time of Thurmond for length of speech.

JLeslie's avatar

Oh, ok. Not a filibuster. I honestly didn’t know the details. So, he just got up there and talked and talked. I guess a senators’ form of protest and warning.

I see now @Jeruba had written it wasn’t a filibuster, but I hadn’t read her response in full before.

Caravanfan's avatar

@raum Of course it was political grandstanding. That was the whole point of it. He wouldn’t have done it if his team didn’t think that people would pay attention.

JLeslie's avatar

It’s nice to have a Black man take away Thurmond’s record of speaking on the Senate floor. Usually, I’m not fond of injecting race, but in this instance I want to acknowledge it.

canidmajor's avatar

I very much like what he was going for, beating Thurmond’s filibuster time againsr the Civil Rights Act.

ETA, seems like we’re on s8milar pages, @JLeslie!

@JLeslie Booker said basically the same thing in a post-game interview.
