So, what’s your take on de-extinction? (Please read details)

This is just one article about the subject, there are many if you don’t like the New York Times.
Are you excited or horrified by such a thing?
Philosophically opposed or supportive?

I love the science, but I’m a little concerned about possible abuses.

What are your thoughts?

I saw that on the news and I’m very uneasy about this. They also spoke of bringing back the Woolly Mammoth. How could this be a good thing? Earth has changed so much, can the animals really thrive in this new world? Do we want someone bringing back the dinosaurs?
Maybe someone can convince me this is a good thing. But right now, I’m not sure.
But I do like that you asked this question.

I think many of us don’t like the NYT because you have to pay to read it. I can get news free.

As far as the Q, @chyna sums up my thoughts on it very well.

The world they once inhabited has gone. Are we bringing these creatures back simply for our own amusemnt. That seems unethical.

I think we need to perfect the technology. We may need it for more than amusement someday.

It’s fascinating as a concept. After all, sci-fi writers have used it as a theme in books and movies for decades.

It’s a bit scary – suppose some mammoth gets loose and mates with African elephants… who knows what bad things could happen.

But with proper scientific controls, it’s a cool idea.

I look at it this way – we (society), when confronted with scientific breakthroughs, need to try them in the interest of experimentation and discovery. We shouldn’t self-censor ourselves in the name of some sort of mystical purity.

If science stops asking questions and discovering new things, we stagnate. SO this is something we should try, carefully.

The person to me that has seen Jurassic Park says, absolutely not to this. The Game of Thrones fan of me says yes, and I want one named Khaleesi!

But all kidding aside, no, it’s not a good idea. To me there are so many more important things to be spending time and resources on researching. This to me falls under the category of, we’re going to do it just because we can.

Is it really “deextinction”? They are basically just normal wolves modified to look like dire wolves. It is like giving a chicken teeth and arms with clawed hands and calling it a velociraptor. It is still a chicken.
